can i just back out my fuel screw a little bit to help slow down/stop backfiring on decel? i heard somewhere that it helps.

That will richen it up a little bit, but you might need a fatter pilot. How many turns out are you at right now, on your screw? You should be between 2 and 3 turns, more than 3 you should go one size richer on your pilot, less than 2, go one size smaller on the pilot. ;)

Or any air leaks for that matter. Make sure your carb is lined up correctly.
