Hey. I just shortend my e-series, and today I took my first test ride on it. When I go its revs normal. But when I let off the throttle its goes brup..brup..brup.. as it lowers in the rpms (hit the name of the thread.) I was just wondering if it is too rich or lean? I have a 158 main, 42 poilet for a K&N, "Open Airbox," and my shortend e-series. As a side note, i am currently running 6 disks out of 12.

Thanks!

That "brup brup brup" us backfiring.

That means most likely your running a little lean.

Like when you let off the thottle, it does that.. I thought it was a little rich. Good thing I didn't lower it down to a 155 tonight, I would have wasted a ton of time. Do you think it will be find for about 2 weeks? Also, I though backfiring was was like a POP! or pop, pop, pop.. But thanks for the responce!

hmmm, well backfiring is a "pop"

Ive never heard of an exhaust "brup" before. Possible to get a soundclip? Then I might be able to help ya.

Otherwise, it may just be you made it so short, that it just echos inside more.

Like I said, get a sound clip.

I know the noise you are talking about. Its more of a gargle than a pop. The pop I think is just really bad lean conditions and the gargle is slightly lean.

to me the jetting sounds fine. i think it has to do with the shortened canister.:macho

it might not have that same POP becuse of the disk type muffler ,sounds like ure pilet is lean, did u try adjusyting the fuel screw, also is the packing still good inside the muffler?

Brauap

The packing is O.K. (God, I hate that stuff!! It gets on your skin and in your close and hurts! lol. its like little neatles pricking you. I still have them.. urgh.) How is the poilet lean? I though 42 was about as large as you want to for stock bore. I dont want to mess with the a/f screw, b/c I will probally screw it up! lol

adjusting a mixture screw

is a half turn out to richen

half turn in to lean

if a half turn isnt enough do another half turn etc..

:macho

When you say out, do you mean to the left? Also, how do you know when enough is enough? Also, say if you run too rich for a little, will it just file your plug?

Thanks for all your help guys! You all are great help!

Ok, I will read up on that tomarrow. But how do I know when enough, is enough?

if its poping. go one half turn out. go ride. still pops. another half turn. lol

Brauap

Alright, lol. Sounds simple enough. The only pain is, I dont want to keep putting everything off, then off. Hmm.. is there a way to adjust it w/o taking off the front fenders?

my88r
03-26-2008, 10:28 PM
lol

just loosen the carb. and turn it so the bowl is facing you. just take the rear fender off and the left side panel. when you turn it back to up rite postion make sure. the carb is seated on the boots.:macho

3 1/2 turns is about all you want to go out. I have turned about 4 turns out on my 450 carb and didnt know about it, but I wouldnt advise it tho.;)
Yea, left will bring it out, and right will bring it in till it seats. Its like tightening up a bolt, lefty loosey righty tighty.

looks like it was smoking a bit, what color is that smoke?? black or a bluish color.

Brauap
03-27-2008, 06:28 PM
Oh yea! Thanks for bringing that up. I forgot to ask about that. There is heavy black residue on my Batt. Box. and the disks get a ton! But when I take off and look, its.. man I dont know how to desribe it.. I don't know what color, its like you know it there. You can see it.. So I guess its not black. But, what does it mean? I had gotton some chainsaw oil inside, I had to lube it up, and I found oil, but forogot to look what kind. lol.. It worked GREAT! But I couldn't get it all out. Do you think that is a little that is just being burnt?!

Thanks

well thats a good point about the oil you used. i remember after i ran my old 400EX till it smoked like a fog machine, after i rebuilt everything, it smoked slightly for a few rides because the oil was burning in the exhaust lol. after a few good rides it finally quit. and also i noticed my Sparks that i made into a shorty made that same noise you describe. probably because they are so short lol.

Hey Braup,it sounds like you are definately rich.I run a 158 main and im running a shortened fmf factory 4.1 with the 2 1/2 in open end cap so its pretty much free flowing.Yours is being choked with only 6 diffuser discs in.4 discs is equal to a 1 inch diameter opening,so your at about a 1 1/2in opening, your jetting is too rich for that, your motor should rev more crisply than that.Go 2 sizes down on your main or put in a few more discs.Im in Hubbard by the way so your weather conditions are the same as mine;)

I have a 155 main sitting around, should I throw that in? That's cool, you live pretty close. Just wondering, are you going to Rumble on the Ridge (rumbleontheridge.homestead.com)?

Right now, it POURING!!!!! I don't think I will be doing any riding tomarrow, Ryan.. :(
