im thinking of doin this to my 400.

my question is what was the price of all the motor work? Where did you go?
what compression piston are you running?
What Cam? if any.

any suggestions are appreciated (sp?)
this will be during the off season from glamis.

Thanks
-mike

Well right now im in the process of getting my motor rebuild and im going with JE 11:1,Stage 2 hotcam,CRF cam chain,Port& Polish, ans a 3 angle valve job.

I'm gonna have C&D racing do my motor work.

For the boring, valve job,P&P and to put in new seals is $310.

I bought the other things somewhere else.

Nope, I did it like that so I could put the motor work on my credit card otherwise it would have been to much.

i just did the 416 install Wiseco 416 piston 11:1 , stage 1 hotcam, and new top end gasket kit for $320, and the place i bought the parts from has a guy who does their engine work so got it bored for $30 and i did the install and tear down its easy with basic tools

Hemi 400 - what happens to the stage 1 Cam's timing ?Does it Need changing?

Is the 416 hop-up simply using all the stock numbers , but a bigger bore ?
I thin I have ring-sleeve wear , or excessive wear , meaning sometime soon I'm going to need to do this .
wiseco will be my choice , but what else did you do ?

Advance ignition key- No idea how that works . Would one need it ?What does it do ? what are its advantages ?

I have hotcam stage 1 in now on the stock motor , but I am told by so many that running even just a 416 makes it a strong puller .
I love upsetting the R riders so with a stock unit ..or stock-LOOKING unit .

so while the motor is open - we do a head flow as well . Ok , I see.
I've given up racing because I did well-enough last year to stand back and say enough was enough . I also dont want a 450 r because I bought an interceptor for wekends .the two now compete for my attention .

and having a smaller bike jump something bigger is far more appealing .

Some more info from you would be appreciatted .

thanks.

Stuart

timing is the same the only thing i had to change was jetting i went from stock to 416 with stage 1 i haven't run it yet to c how much more it pulls but i will post when i do and as for the key i have no clue there are some people on here that will know better due to they run one beside the boring i have no other work done to the motor trading it in on a 525 irs outlaw so i didn't want to put in alot of money just enought to get a good trade in

$320-$350 doesnt seem bad at all.
i could do that and wouldnt have to get a job.

i'll have to go to my shops around here and see what they charge to bore it out.
got 4 shops, so i should get a good deal.

thanks

if i use the 11:1 piston will i also need to put in the HD head studs to keep from blowing gaskets?

Proudly using Wiseco for over 15 years in all kinds of machines. My current setup is a 10:1 416 with a stage 1 HC running on E85. Far better then stock!

Piston & gaskets - $140
Bore job - $60
HC stg1 - $120

With a 416 you don't need HD studs, I havn't had any issues with mine.

Only thing ive heard about wiseco is their pistons for the 400ex's arn't accurate compression ratio's.

where did you get your cam, the only price ive found is 179-189 for any stage.

the piston i run, will be what the shop carries that will do my bore job.

I got my hotcam on ebay from Honda of Troy. I think it was like $135 with the shipping. Be careful with buying pistons from machine shops, they tend to be way too expensive in my experience. That's another reason I like the shop I go to, they have no problem with people bringing in their own pistons.

my shop that i normally go to for all my offroad needs is chaparral and the pistons are around 100-110 for just the piston and rings..

well i asked my dad about doing this since it is "his" bike because he bought it but i was gonna pay for the work to get done.

he said no. not until it needs engine work to be done, when it looses compression.

so now my question is, how long do these 400ex engines last before they loose compression and need a rebuild?

I've ran mine for over a year with bad rings and somehow it still ran didnt haveany power but it still ran.

As long as no dirt or dust and such enters pass the air filter the motor will run forever.

i havent owned my 400ex long..but i did notice yesterday and today that upon start up it smoked white for a couple of secs then went away..

now on a car(i used to own honda's there too)when this happened the valve seals where leakin some oil overnight and it'd burn off in the first few seconds and run fine..just curious if its the same for the 400ex as well?

i didnt notice this when i bought it but guaranteed they started it up before i got there just incase and i didnt notice it the first two days.. recently i did change the oil/filter and cleaned the top of the head it was very greasey..also cleaned the airbox and k&n filter

so any help..i didnt want to start a new thread for just a quick answer like this so i figured with all the intelligent people in here this could quickly get answered and move on :D
