This is for all the duners out there. What front sprocket are you running? What rear sprocket are you running? What type of riding are you doing? What paddels are you running? I'm getting my 400 ready for this dune season and am going to gear it just for that. I plan on gearing for a rec style riding and maybe picking up some different sprockets for drag. (depending on what happens with my motor) I have a set of haulers 6 paddles that I can run if I don't get a set of "V" paddles, however "V" paddles are going to be on most of the time unless I'm gonna drag. I have never set up a 400 only 250r's and shee's. Anything more on duning a 400 would be great!

Thanks,
Dahlen

If I can remember right I'm at a 13 tooth front and a 39 in the rear. Sand Stars front and rear.

I ran a 14/39 the first time out at the dunes and it was geared to high with 20" Sand Star tires.

The next time I went out I ran a 13/39 and it was geared plenty low enough to conquer any hill Glamis had to offer.

At Silver Lake...I ran 16/38 but mods are below with 20" tires.. It's not the fastest thing but it hangs neck and neck with a piped/jetted banshee from 0- top of 5th. I might try 15 or 14 after finding that was stock. With paddles it might make it easier to launch in second. First is useless in the sand from what I found. Second is VERY hard to keep the front down with 16T. 14 might make it easier to finess...I'm not sure. If you're 400cc near stock I'd keep a 14t on it and have fun. Knobbies or paddles you'll be fine. 16 makes for some FAST riding on the flats and beach.

14/38 worked good for me with 20" rears.

Last year I ran the stock 15/38 gearing with 20-10-10 8 paddle extreme haulers.

This year I'm running 14/36 with the same paddles.

my set-up is in my signature.

it dunes great, i can dune in 3rd gear with minimal down shifting and shift up when i get to the big dunes behind Oldsmobile and near the closed areas.

this also works great for climbing the hills. i can start in 2nd with no bog, and be in 3rd within 10-15 ft from take off.
i do this against a stock 400 (with pipe/filter) and i can get 5-7 lenghts on them.

i can hang with 450s with pipes 3/4 way up the hills, but once they shift up, they pull away.

hey does anyone know what kind of paddle i should run ? i went down a tooth in the front for the sand cause i heard it was the right set up for dunes but it was way to much but i run 10 paddle haulers and i need a less agressive tire so....

ITP sand stars (8 paddle)
GBC Sand Shark (8 Paddle)
STU Sand Skate II's (8 Paddle)
Skat Trak Edge (8 Paddle)

those are some good choices that i have ran on my 400 and i like them all. i like the sand stars the most cuz i can roost my followers really good!

I recommend dropping your front sprocket down one tooth. You need the extra low end torque to keep the wheels spinning on steep dunes and softer sand

i dropped a tooth on the front for my last trip i just got back from and it sucked . i have like no top end power and its hard to climb big dunes . it feels like im driving a tractor lol it might be my 10 paddle 20' haulers so thats why im tryin to figure out what tire to gear ratio to use

yes, 10 paddles are too much for a stock 400ex, even a 450r, you loose some power.
if your tight on money, go for the sand shark paddles, they are about 30-40$ a piece and last quite a while if you maintain air pressure.
