Who has wraped their header pipes??

I wraped my head pipe today on the 465 thumper with header wrap, what's the benifit, besids keeping the heat away from the cylinder, will a hot pipe work better? Sound waves travel faster the hotter the temps get, it seems like this would help the scavaging effect of the pipe.

I did mine. It keeps the heat from your header off the head of the motor. I personally have seen a great deal in drop in oil temp.
Its not a cheap mod. The wrap cost about a buck of foot.

Header wrap certainly works. Keeping the heat enery in the exhaust gas keeps the velocity up and it exits faster.

I'd like to see a pic. I think I will get my header chromed will this help keep the heat away from the head also, or is it just the wrap that helps.

Most race motors do have ceramic coating. Back in the day when I took my car to the tracks, I was finding out all the other GN owners were going with the header wrap instead of the ceramic coating. I was told ceramic coating works, but not quite as good as the wrap. (the wrap is made of thick fiber glass):D

I went riding today, fifth gear, long winding straights, I couldn't feel any performance gains, as far as torque goes, there maybe a 1-2 mph gain at WOT.

Yeah me either, but a hot pipe has to do something useful, wraping headers will work the best when in fifth gear WOT, when the exhaust valves are moving the fastest, a hotter pipe will scavang better, because the negative waves leaving the pipe will move faster. You might see a difference in the 1/4 mile drag, other than that, wraping headers won't do much for all around performance, but it keeps the heat off the cylinder, and that's a good thing for the engine.

you also have to watch because you did not wrap the pipe correctly. you do not have the correct "OVERLAP" of wrap on the pipe. the wrap is supposed to overlap only a 1/4" inch or so. if it is wrapped unevenly it can cause hot spots and can cause cracking.

I dont see how you could really benefit from header wrap on a quad anyway.

Car racers use it for keep the under hood temps down so that the intake isnt sucking hot air. Since quads air boxes are in the back and they are pretty well ventilated I cant see how you would really benefit from it.

Sounds more like a waste of money IMO.

You maybe right there.. Im just saying is it really worth the money, and maybe even the risk (if its not done right and cracks the pipe) to mess with it.

HiPercoat from www.hpcoating.com does the same thing that header wrap does!! its coated inside and outside the pipe and it keeps the header cool and keeps the exhaust gas velocity up!!! And it looks awesome!!! You can have the header done for $45,,,,my header and midpipe cost $70!!!!

The 1/4 inch overlap is to ensure the wrap is doing its intended job of not letting the heat out.

I personally did not see any performance changes. What I did see is a drop in oil temp....and my right leg doesnt nearly as hot in the summer as it used to.

Personally i think header wrap is only good if you wanna make your quad look ugly. It just don;t look good.

Header wrap is not designed specifically to provide an instant gain in horsepower or instant results from your seat of the pants meter. Header wrap is more so for racers. Heat is a four-stroke motor's worst enemy, and the more heat there is, the more horsepower is lost. Where you would see the results from the wrap, or the coating, is in the final 10 minutes of a 30 minute moto, or towards mid-way into a gncc, where the engine is as hot as can be. When other four-strokes have lost hp due to the heat of the engine and the oil temp, you may have a 3-4 hp advantage on them, THATS where the results are. Your motor will run cooler, saving hp, and extending the life of your engine. Hope that helps. :D

Oh yea nacs, it is ugly, but it serves its purpose. The ceramic coating looks trick though.

I'm not talking about the chroming the header wrap, just the header. Should I get it chromed inside and out and what advantages will this have other than the look?

You wouldnt want to get it chromed inside and out, but the HiPercoat from HP Coatings is real nice. It looks just like chrome except it is designed to do the same thing a header wrap does, hold the heat inside the pipe and keep the exhaust gas velocity up where your hot air is escaping from the silencer instead of heating the header up as well as everthying the header is connected to!!! The stuff looks awesome, its very affordable and it will do the same thing as that funky looking header wrap,,,cant beat that!!!

Does that Hypercoat stuff rust? B/C I'm on my 2nd pipe from Curtis Sparks and my new one is rusting already. It's only 2 months old!!! WTF!! What a ****ty process Curtis uses!! The performance is awesome and the ceramic sucks!! Go figure. :grr :huh :confused:

i like the cremic coating. i am tired of polishing my stock header, after i ride it, it turns colors. does the cremic coating, like the picture above change colors. thanks

Well i havent got a chance to run it yet but it is guaranteed not to rust or change colors or they will fix it for free!! Looks like some high quality stuff!!!
