Anyone ever tried this w/ the 400ex oil cooler?

We went to Busco beach again this weekend and I noticed on the tight trails that I might have a good idea to cool the engine.. I have a oil temp stick on the way also. I was thinking of mouting 2 small high performance pc fans behing the cooler to help cool the oil more. A bracket would be easy to make since I love to fabricate. Mount a tiny switch or just run it off the ignition when in the "on" position. I thought about scoops but they don't help at low speeds.

I could tell if it helped by looking at the guage. What do ya'll think? The only problem I might see is a big clump of mud hitting the fans and they break.

I think I would first do a little monitoring of the oil temp ,with that new temp stick you've got coming to determine if you are really going to need more cooling at those lower speeds.

my guess is that at the lower speeds, you wil not be creating an excessive amount of heat, and really wont need it.

another concern would be if the fans will run on 12v dc current, and if so, what would their amperage draw be?
you might be surprised to find that they will draw quite a bit of current, and therefore may tax your battery/charging system a little more than you may like.

remember that your bike does not have a kick starter!

Spal makes a 4" puller fan designed for ATV use and it's fairly easy to mount up to a EX.

FYI--The 4" fan pulls 1.9amps the stock stator puts out nearly 12 amps.

Check the yoshi pipe jetting thread, I have some pics posted of my setup.

Great feedback! I could use a dvom to check the voltage and amperage drop. Maybe the fans out of a car audio amp would would work better.

this is so sad, get 1 120mm comp fan they dont draw anything. Do be surprised when it breaks.

i have done this awhile back and it works great no monitoring needed. i have the spal 4" puller fan. its awesome. i also added an oversize oil tank.

Spal sells both pushers and pullers. For a 400 you'll need a puller, there isn't enough room in front of the oil cooler for a pusher.

Yes. They are specifically designed for an ATV application.

Temp dipsticks can be purchased on ebay, or XR's only.

I tried a small computer fan on my ex about 4 years ago.I could not tell a difference on my dipstick. I had it hooked up to my headlights so when my lights were on the fan was on too. Also those computer fans are not water proof or sealed for dirt,mine quit working.It did not last long

yeah i figured it was a puller because it was ont he back side but i wasnt sure. Do they make like 3" fans? I was wondering about mounting 2 smaller fans side by side to cover more area. I also dont want to restrict normal flow much either

you can look on the spal website and get spec sheets and all on the fans they carry. they are water and dust proof as they are completely incased

4" is the smallest they make. 1--4" fan will be more than enough to keep a EX cool.
