just me, but i would start at a 158 main, 42 pilot, 2 turns out on the air fuel screw.

Sounds about right.
I'm running pretty much the same set-up as you and I'm running a 158 and 42.

158 sounds right, although I would recommend a 40 pilot rather than the 42.

Hey wheelie I have to ask... how did the spal fan come out? Notice it running better or cooler?

The fan came out great, I love it. It's nice to have cooling on demand, flip a toggle switch and go. Despite it's size (4") it moves a lot of air. Haven't ridden it enough yet to truly test it out, just got the quad done yesterday.

Heading to the dunes April 4,5,6, that'll be the true test.

My friend has a 250cc go cart. It has a roll cage, racing seats and harneses, decent shocks, atv tires... anyways the point is its liquid cooled. The day we went riding in them I was checking out the intercooler and I was truely surprised how much cooler the fans made it and how much air they pushed. His friend with the same go cart riding on the same day same place was overheating and he didnt have his fan on. While my friend with his fans on constant didnt have any problems whatsoever. So I assume on the 400ex it would be the same thing. Probally not such a drastic change whether over heating or not but I'm sure they help. Any pictures of the fan mounted?

Here are a couple. I had to do some trimming on the plastic cover below the fuel tank. Other than that--no problems.

This was my first mock up. I tried mounting the oil cooler lower for improved clearance, however the return line didn't like the angle. Ultimately the oil cooler ended up sitting at the stock distance from the oil tank.

Here is how it sits now. The plastic cover isn't touching the fan and it's not obstructing airflow at all. One nice feature of the cover is it directs the airflow of the fan over the cylinder head. Enough that air movement can be felt at the carb. The draft in front of the oil cooler is significant.

Another view. I made a lower support that bolts to one of the ears of the fan and utilizes one of the oil line bolts.

very interesting. I was thinking of buying an aftermarket oil cooler kit and mounting the fans on that... but thats also a chunk of change that i dont have right now. How much was it for that fan?

www.spal-usa.com

I got mine from 08400ex for about $50.

FYI--The fan only pulls 1.9 amps, the stock stator output is about 12 amps. The stock charging system can handle the extra load--no sweat.

I was going to use a temp probe and relay, but I ditched the idea after the fan was mounted. I felt the probe was going to be too close to the fan to be accurate and cause the fan to 'short cycle'. I mounted a toggle switch between the stock neutral light and ignition switch.

I run a 160 main 40 pilot everything else in carb stock.

It works well for me but my weather is low elevation and high humidity.

My mods are

Yoshi RS-3 FS CB
K&N Powerlid
UNI Filter w/ Pro Design Base w/ positive o-ring seal
