had a big day planned for me and my 00 300ex so last night i changed the oil and filter when i did i mistakenly put the new filter in backwards which i assume caused a serious oil flow problem any way we went riding and after about a 10 minute ride i noticed a loss of power and alot of valve noise so went stopped and headed for the shop we tightened the valves and put it back together it sounded fine had its power back so we struck out again and after about 20 minutes i lost all power and died.... immediately after this the starter couldnt turn it over so i got towed back to the shop by that time it had cooled off i pulled the oil filter to find it backwards flipped it over and reinstalled it and we were able to get it started but i seem to have some valve noise and it is smoking acks like its too rich or the choke is on not burning oil and seems to have decent power..........any ideas or suggestions of what to do or check would be a great help

thanks

ill bet with the lack of oil your piston is scored. just my 2 cents worth

would that cause the noise or the smoke?

if your cylinder is scored, more than likely your rings are stuck to the piston allowing oil to bypass

Oh, man, you should hope and pray that it's only a piston/ring problem. With an oil-flow problemm, you could easily have trashed the crank bearings and require a complete tranny rebuild.

Usually the first thing that happens is your cam seizes and you skip time. Pay attention to the timing when you take it apart and inspect the cam journals.

my tranny seems ok but im going to start at the top checking the cam and valves first thats where the noise is coming from

thanks ill update later

thanks for all the help

300ex.

0.004" intake and exhaust.

White puffs of smoke on acceleration, etc.. is usually bad rings.
