I am currently in the process of stripping a 400ex frame that will have a CR85 placed in it. The brackets to accept the motor were already in place and the rest is in the building phase. Hopefully I can have my 12 year old on it in a few weeks. How much power should we expect out of the stock cr85 motor? I also have another cr85 motor available to me that is built up to 101CC I believe.

it all depends on the rider.my sons been riding since 4 years old. now he will run me off the track. the motor we had since the quad got stollen. if his a good rider meaning you dont have much teaching left. he will be fine with the powerfull motor. we had a 15 tooth front sprocket and 49 in the rear. it needed a 16 up front or smaller rear sprocket. 1st and 2nd gear woundup to quick. other then that that was the best quad i ever rode. were puting one together again. if you need some help with things just ask. no one likes to talk about these builds.

You mean some one stole that quad that you posted ?

Got a question. Does anyone make the mounting brackets aftermarket to go from a 400 to a cr85 or is it purley fabrication on everyones part. The 400 fram that I have which is set up for the 85 is showing some bad cracks that I am not comfortable with having fixed and I have another 400ex frame that is in good condition. I hate to cut these off of one frame and put them into another if I can purchase the brackets that could just bolt on.

I have seen these little mod bikes around for years but never paid any attention to them. I have a few questions since it's up for discussion. LOL

Are you guys using stock 250R or 400EX ( or blaster, etc...) frames or are you cutting them down? I ask this because I have seen a YFZ based chassis w/ a YZ85 motor and a 250R based chassis with a CR85 motor. Both were cut down. The one in the pictures here doesn't appear to be though?

My son has several years before he could race a bike this size, but I can't help but to want to build a tricked out EX or R based mini with a screaming CR85 in it just to play with. My friend (who's a diehard Yamaha guy) has been talking about building the YFZ/YZ85 mini. What about a little four stroke? Something like the CRF150 motor? I think the 2 stroke would be way more fun.......

Any detailed info would be great.

Thanks!

I am building a cr85 in a full size 400ex frame and only modifying what is absolutely necessary. My son is 12 and after he gets comfortable on the thing we are going to let him race it. I believe that this is going to prove to be a good introduction to the bigger quads for him.

Thats what were hoping to do as well, but were having a heck of a time finding a CR125 around here.
Has there been any CR's up in Wa for sale ?
If you come across one after you find yours, let us know .:)

I am curious to know though the differences in the 125's . I know many choose the YZ motor, Im guessing a power deal... but Honda seems to keep working for us in reliability,so thats why we are leaning that direction again.
In any of the 125's for her theres probably more than enough power to even touch before she moves up to a 450 anyhow .:p lol
The 85's alone put out a ton , I cant imagine how much the 125 is gonna have !:blah:

Tina theres cr125s on ebay all the time , "new" 1650 and yea theres about 10 more horses with the 125 over the 85 and the ktm's are about 3 to 4 hp over the cr-yz-kx and have hydraulic clutch:D but cant beat honda reliability.

Troy come across a heck of a deal on a 125, I just hope I can hook up with it before it sells. IVe been looking more locally and on Ebay, but it would be nice to find one locally.
Brandon has been helping me find them on the Net.lol

Whats 1650?? A motor? Were lookin for the whole bike. Our motor builder wants to buy the rolling chassis off us and install a CR 600 motor he built.:huh

Where did you find a deal like that??!! :eek2: not bad!!
I found a whole bike for 1400.00 ,but it is used.. but barely. lol

Were selling Kelseys as we speak too. If I dont get a buyer by the end of the week,we will wait until Fall so were not too pressed for time.

Have you started the install yet??
I bet hes excited!! I know Kelsey is! :D

I'm not sure what you guys are payin for the motors, but me and a buddy built a couple mods for are kids a couple years ago and got a great deal on brand new motors. We went with the YZ85 just to be different cuz everyone was doing CR's at the time, but if you search for a dealer that deals with shifter carts they will sell you the motor pretty cheap I paid $1000.00 for brand new YZ85 couple years ago. I had to get the radiator (actually had one custom built for $200.00) and a couple little things but it seemed to be alot cheaper than buying a bike and selling it less the motor which is what alot of people did.

To answer your question about the "why people use yz engines"

If you read up on some of the 125 shootouts, yamaha has one of the best 125 dirtbike engines. It's a very broad power range and one of the most reliable dirtbikes engines made.

In mxa, the 07 yz125 won the 125 shootout. As the yz250 won the 250 shootout.

The cr is a good engine too. You can't really go wrong with either of the two bikes. The cr supposedly has the least power of the 125's but also a broad power range like the yamaha.

Are you guys able to run 250f engines? For her hybrid, as much as i like 2-strokes, I think the 250f would be a better engine for the hybrid. It has a little more horsepower and torque, plus, because it is a 4-stroke, it is a broad power range and would move the weight better.

Dont quote me on this, but there was some desputes on the 250f as the first of the 2008 series. I dont know if there will be a class next season or not unless its a production quad.
I cant remember all the details on it .

When it comes to a hond,a we have had nothing but the best results in reliability.Yamaha might be a faster motor, but Id take reliability over power-NOT TO SAY that Yamaha ISNT ,but Honda has proven nothnig but good for us and we have FANTASTIC local support with Honda dealer.

As for me personally... I dont believe a thing shootouts have to say.:p
lol

What do you mean? People actually got in trouble for running 250f motors?

Honda and Yamaha are both very reliable. Thats why they're my two favorite brands:D Ive had absolutely NO trouble with all our previous yamahas (ie: blaster, warrior, banshee, wolverine) and my 400ex hasnt given me any problems either. Neither did my old atc110 from way back. lol.

It depends with shootouts. If they really know what they are talking about, I tend to believe them sometimes. But some magazines are too blunt and dont give many details.

Not got in trouble, just addressed it this past year on fairness/power ect..
Im not sure what the outcome was on the topic, but I know it was addressed.

You guys should check out the full size minis, kids on quads racing, is building, and the rmz 250 motored ones they build also. they are sweet, and they have trimed about 40 lbs off the stocked framed ones. they have also done the 125 two stroke motored ones, but chose to use the 250 four stroke because of vibration. kidsonquads.com
