I just rebuilt my 400, put in a sparks 416 pistion, hd studs, and a stage 2 hotcam. I'm running 110 octane gas. just started it up for the first time and it seems to run fine but their is a cloud of white smoke behind it. i changed the jets to a 40 pilot and a 162 main, moved the clip done one spot, it has a small tick but i think its a leak in the exhaust. I dont know whats wrong so I was hoping for some help. thanks

Did you install new valve seal?

i changed the base and head gaskets, the gasket on top the head and the gaskets on the circular covers that cover the valves

the tick is probably gonna be your hotcams. if you have the valves adjusted to hotcams specs then its probly something youll always have. your sure the smoke is white and not blue? also how long have you ran the engine? did it continue to smoke the entire time? you may just need to break in the new rings

the smoke might be slightly blue but its more white than anything, i have only ran it for a min or 2 cuz i was afraid something was wrong, it seemed to get a tad better but as soon as i got on the gas it was back. It seems to be alot of smoke, like more that it was smokin before i rebuilt it. also the oil is new so would that cause the smoke to be white instead of blue?

When i first started my motor after the rebuild last spring i had the same symptoms but then it cleared up after running it for 5-10mins and has run great ever since.

any break in tips, I heard I should let it run for 5 min and let it sit for 10 and do this 3 times but the guy that told me that also said that he used it only on 2 strokes

everyone says different things. I would just use the search option for this site and pick which one you like best.

your head gasket isnt leaking onto the pipe is it? i know its a new gasket but did you torque the head bolts down in any sequence?or did you just tighten them all down in any order?EDIT: do you have a freshly oiled air filter?

i torqued them down in an x pattern, i pulled my spark plug and it dosent seem to have oil on it, it seems like its just throwing smoke out the exhaust/ the exhaust is coated in oil
