I have gotten everything pulled off of my bike except the carb where it attaches to the engine.

What do I do to get to the main jet?

Take the carb off. I recemend to get a towl and lay it over the bike to work on. Lay the carb upside down. Take off the 4 screws at the bottom (you have to have a 5th one off to get the bowl off) Once the bowl is off, look at it. There will be a little plastic "ring" pull that off and where it was thats the main jet. The poilet is just next to that. To take the main off, just use your fingers and unscrew.

I hope this helps you. I know what it's like, not knowing about the carb too well.. it sucks don't it.

you dont need to take the bowl off to get to the main jet braup. if you look at the bottom of the carb, there is a plug almost dead center with a hex head at the top. take that plug off with a wrench and once its off you will see the main jet sitting right there. take a small 1/4" drive socket(6mm if i remember correctly) and it should fit right over the jet. WORK SMART NOT HARD!!! :D

Thanks guys, I eventually figured it out, but the instructions I had were not for a 400ex and everything looked different.

I was a little frustrated at one point but got everything done. It is running pretty well with a 170 main 40 pilot and a little bit of tuning the needle and air screw.

Holy crap, a 170 main?! I'm running a 158 main in my '07 w/ a Yoshi full exhaust, K&N filter and outerwears airbox lid. (42 pilot)

Is that Keihin jets or Dynojets because a 170 main seems really high...

Keihn, and it is still a little lean, I am going to buy a 178-172 keihns. I called Yoshi and K&N and they both recommended starting with a 178.

The reason I think it is lean is because I will start coughing in the higher rpm's. There is no backfiring. I think I am using a DJ jet because it came with the K&N. I am about to go buy a 158 keihn and see if it works.

Oh. Wish I would have known that. Would've saved me a ton of time. Do you have any pictures, please?

Thanks!

no pictures right now(off at college) but i think the plug is visible with the carb on the quad. if you go look at your quad, on the very bottom of the carb theres a hex head plug. if you drain your carb, you wont even need to take the carb off the bike to change the main jet!

Thanks, I eventually found that out, as I now have a lot better understanding of how a carb works. Unfortunately, I used the trial and error method. If I had not know what a main jet looked like I would have never been able to replace one. I think it made me a better person for it though.
