i just got an 01 400ex and i know it needs a valve adjustment b/c of a tick noise, but when i rode it the first time, it seemed to cut out like it was running out of gas when it had plenty. could this be a valve problem? oh and when i put the airbox i made on it (milk jug) it seemed to do the cutting out 2wice as much, before it was only at high rpms

Sounds like a jetting issue. Exaclty what throttle position is it cutting out or starting to cut out. If you put on a lid and it did it worse, then you are running a little rich. You will have to lean the proper jet curcuit. To determine that you need to know what the throttle position is.
Check to make sure your air boot didn't slip off the carb. It has happened to me a couple times!

i bet it might be the jetting. seemed like i could go through all the gears fine, but when i hit the top end of any gear it did it, so that may be why. What will happen to my motor if i dont fix the valve adjustment?

I would just adjust them man it doesnt take very long, If it needs it. I have a 2007 400ex and it ticks like a mo fo. They all do
