I got my 450r carb installed. i havent gotten my thumb throttle yet so i havent been able to actually ride it. At an idle the motor sounds pretty smooth but im getting a lot of popping and backfiring out of the exhaust especially when i let off the throttle from revving it. but the main issue is the extreme amount of heat coming off the motor expecially the headpipe. i was letting it idle and it fried my clutch cable the pipes got so hot(even with the bracket on cable) My jetting now is a 45 pilot and a 185 main with pilot screw 2 turns out and needle clip on 4th notch from top. i know this seems lean on the pilot but when i put the 50 pilot in it, it backfired out of the carb. any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. i wanna ride this weekend but dont wanna burn anything up. also anyone know which clutch cable it is that you can route outside of the headers? my mods are below.

Richen the fuel screw and/or the pilot jet. If it's popping/backfiring on deceleration and getting really hot while idling, the idle circuit is most likely lean, or you could have an air leak around the intake boot leaning the mixture. Spray some carb cleaner or something similar around the boot. If the idle fluctuates, there's a leak. If you can't find a leak anywhere, open the fuel screw until it stops popping. If you go past about 3 turns out and it isn't fixed, go to the next larger pilot.

Dang, mine would'nt even idle with a 45 pilot and Im on the stock bore and piston. It finally smoothed out on a 50 pilot with around 3 turns but it was still popping slightly on decel. I have a 52 in it now with 2 turns and its perfect. I would try a 52 or maybe 55 if I were you, I see a few 440 boys running those.;)
But first tho, Id try the carb spray trick like F-16 said.

i was useing a 175 main and a 48 pilot on my 416 with the 450r carb. is it the 04-05 0r the newer one? you def need at least the 48 pilot jet and then i'd go from there.

that is what I am running too a 48 pilot with a 175 main and I have a 465 stroker, I have my airbox closed. I think the air flow has alot to do with the size of the main jets- I started way to rich with my jetting and I had to work my way down to almost the same jets that I was running in the stock carb. I had a 38 pilot in the stocker and a 170 main.

yeah i started at 185 and went down but the only ones i have seen with anything over a 182 was with port and polish and everything else

thanks for all the help guys. it is a 04-05 carb that im running and i think i got it real close now. I went ahead and put a 52 pilot in it with a 195 main and the idle smoothed right out and the popping dropped off cosiderably. i took it out today and man it ran good. still popping a bit on decel so i think im gonna try a 155 that should be good. also it ripped real hard all the way through the throttle, but at wot out in a field i felt a little drop off so i remembered the guy at the moto shop said he had a 215 main. im pretty sure that will be pretty good cuz im running with no airbox just k&n plus outerwear. i have ridden in a bit of nasty conditions and the k&n stays clean and motor stays real clean. what you guys think, should i put box back on? ive been without it for like 6mos now.

i think a 215 might be too rich lol the 195 main should be close i'm thinking go to jetsrus.com and get a 198 and a 200 and see what that dose.
