i bought my wife a 400ex and i was maintenancing today and i need to adjust the chain. my Z has an aftermarket swinger and the swinger came with a tool for spinning the bearing carrier. i looked in the honda tool kit but no joy. is there a certain tool you all use to move the bearing carrier to adjust the chain? if so where can i get one?

yup a big freakin screwdriver/prybar. just be careful not to pry too hard because it's just cast aluminum. i'm always afraid of shattering a piece of that slot off.

I just adjusted mine and my neighbors tonight, we swapped rear sprockets (both got our sets at the same time and have the same amount of riding time). His was a little to high, mine too low. What I've always done is put the rear up on stands, loosen the pinch bolts and stick a screw driver horizontally through the sprocket into a slot on the carrier. Then I gently turn the tire while holding on to the screw driver and let the sprocket push the carrier around. It's a real safe and easy way to go about it.

Correct, which is also used to loosen/tighten the clamp screws and is also used with the factory spark plug wrench.

So i kinda burgered mine up a bit trying to get it to tighten. Is there a reason why it wouldn't come loose,(and yes i loosed all the bolts) usually it just spins easy but today i had to fight it and of course bent and scrapped some of the metal. Also any suggestions on how it adjust the now messed up slots. Thanks

2 big mother flat head screw drivers stuffed in the adjuster part together to take up the space and make a snug fit in it. it allows plenty of torque to get it to spin also since they should be about a foot long or so. steve

i V mine in there to take up the space. it makes it have much more contact with the walls and makes the pressure spread much better on the soft metal. steve

don't you have the allen wrench that came in your 400ex tool kit?

You shouldn't have to turn very hard, i sometimes will lift up the quad after i loosen the 4 bolts. just move it around a little if you think it's jammed in there.

Then make sure the axle is turned so u can get a good grip on one of those notches in the hub thing.

that allen wrench fits perfectly in the slot...it's not very strong however but it will do the job without gouging and shredding the aluminum.

I have an aftermarket one and just use
an adjustable Spanner Wrench I got at
princess auto for 18$, works like a breeze
and it doesn't destroy anything.

if it is really imposable to turn u might want to think about removeing the carrier and greesing the out side up b/c it shouldn't be that hard to turn
