well my earlier options were the 400ex and the 450r, after some more research and sitting on all the 450s i decided on the kfx. the prob. is im on a 250ex and was wondering if this would be to much? what do you guys think?

respect the bike & its power and it'll respect you(for the most part). keep in mind it does have roughly 4 times the power of your ex...i used to have a 250ex back in the day but i didn't go straight from the honda to the kawi. i see your 15? it could be a handful for some1 your age but in reality no1 will know if its to much power for you better then yourself. see if you can test ride one at your local dealer maybe.

Like 08kfx450r said, only you really know your skills. In many ways it will be easier to ride then your 250EX. It is WAY more stable and when you get the suspension dialed in, it will be much easier to go faster over things without any trouble. My daughter has a 250EX so I have been on both. Now, it will be a BIG upgrade over the 250 with much more power and no sport clutch. You can put a 15 tooth sprocket on the front to help with top speed, but in your case it will take some of the power snap out of the bottom end.
Now I also happen to have a 400EX which also would be a good choice. The 400 has a lot of bottom end so in terms of you upgrading, it would be about as big of a jump as the 450R.

Another thing to think about is the type of riding you do. Both the 400EX and the KFX 450R are great quads. If you just trail ride and do more slow riding where you lug the engine, I would go with the 400EX. For track or faster trail riding and especially racing, I would go with the KFX 450R.
I have something else for you to think about since you are 15. There is a HUGH difference in price between a 400EX and the KFX 450 to start with. Then future upgrades for power will cost a lot more on the KFX compared to a 400EX. With fuel injection, you can't just slip on another muffler like you can on the 400EX. The KFX will need a Power Commander fuel programmer, or similar, (around $300) to make any changes to the intake or exhaust. The 400EX or other carburetor models just need a simple jetting change.
To sum it up, if you can control your thumb, you should be alright.

yeah just do that in your break in period, just dont over rev. you may pay more for the 450 up front, but if you got the 400, and i had one so i know, you will probably end up spending just has much if not more to get the 400 to the power and suspension of a 450. yeah you will spend a little more on a programmer, but it is also alot easier to adjust your fuel mixture. i would say that if your parents are on board they probably know something we dont, your riding ability. so i know if i was you i would go for the 450.

also how big are you for your age, i know when i was 15 i was already 6' and 200lbs

oh and it just so happens i have a controller for sale:D

Wow i was going through the exact issue. I am 15 but i am 6"1 at 140lbs lol. Also i am going from the 300ex to a 450r... i doubt it will ever be "too much" power for us. I don't think you should have to worry too much.

Well im 14 and can ride it fine. just got to take your time and dont underestimate the bike. But again ive been riding since i was 7. rode a 50
went to a 100 dirtbike then to a 300 quad. to a 125 two stroke. to a 250 two stroke dirtbike. to my current kfx 450.

possibly not in that exact order but i didnt ride all of them.
