Ok guys, need some numbers from some of you that have built 250Rs.

I am thinking of building one since I can not find a hole machine with in a reasonable driving distance of my home.

My neighbor has a sweet 250R that is built to the max. The only thing on his machine that is not worked over is the frame. And he wants a better frame just to have it. So we were BSing with the idea of me buying his 86' frame. He also has a carb, a rear shock that needs to be rebuilt, a-arms, an extended swing arm, axle and a few other things. Almost enough stuff to make a rolling chasis. We have not discused a price yet even if we decided to do it.

My question is, if I were to try and build a nice 250R in a mild state of tune, What are your estimates for putting one together? If I hunt e-bay hard, do you think I could put together a good machine in about 6-9 months and for a total of around maybe $2500 invested if I really pinch my pennies. I have know problems turning a wrench so that saves me a lot of money right there. Other than any needed machine work, I could do everything.

Or do I just go find a what ever and go ride it. This will be a second machine for me. I have a very nice 400ex and my wife will ride it when we go. I am also eyeballing an older Banshee that is nice, rebuilt, pipes, rest is stock and not much time on it. I think I can get it for around 2000. Would I be better off building a 250R or maybe getting something like a Banshee?

Thanks for the input guys. From what I read, you guys have better input than folks in some of the other forums.

The banshee sounds like a good deal, but the R is a better bike. If you want to keep it in a mild state of tune, let me know what parts you need(I part out 4-5 bikes a week) and I'll sell stock or well used aftermarket parts cheap to help a fellow R rider.

I have a couple in pieces, but here's about the best deal you can find-

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/mcy/597276243.html

He'll take 550 shipped. I have a fmf gold series pipe for 35 shipped, v-force reeds(needs new pedals) or boysen dual stage, intake boot, carb, all motor mounts, race harness, stock faded blue gas tank with mounts and petcock, stock stem, stock spindles with hubs and rotors, and a stock radiator I'd do for 125 shipped. If you need anything else let me know, I have tons of other R parts.

I need to get with my neighbor and see what he really wants to do and how much. He has a good bit of stuff.

I will have dig into this a little farther. I will be in touch.

Thanks again.

ditto :blah:

Your numbers seem really low to have a mildly tune R. Bump it by a grand and you get a lot of flexibility.

That is what I was thinking it would be around 3500-4000 just to keep it a mild machine.
