Nope they won't, the carrier area of the 400ex axle is longer.
There will be side to side slop.

My neighbor did this and ignored the side to side slop and used it for 1 race.
Blew out his carrier, chain came off and mutilated the rear sprocket.

And you can't put a 400ex carrier in an R either. I bought a new carrier once and they sent me one for a 400ex, it was about 1/4" longer.

You could make a 400ex axle work, but you would need a 400ex carrier and then you would need to do machining on it. For me it wasn't worth the trouble, I sold off my 400ex stuff and bought stuff for a 450R. Also there were issues with the brake stay too if I remember correctly. Search for this and use my username in your search criteria, I posted a while back that this wouldn't work, even though multiple people had already said it would.

You can use a 400ex axle if you have a 400ex carrier, but then you have to have a 400ex swingarm too. Defianately not worth it. The brake stay from a 450 will go on to a 400 if you want to use the 450r rotor and caliper. I had a 450r rear end on my 400. Too much trouble. And my discoveries of what will and won't work were learned the hard way as well.

Ok maybe the stock brake stays will interchange, I had a rad axle carrier for a 400EX and the brake stay was WAY differen than that on my 450R.

It will fit, U have to press the sprocket hub off the 400ex axle and and the sprocket hub off the 450r axle and press the 450r sprocket hub on the 400ex axle. Thats it, Bolts up just like honda did it. It took 15-tons of pressure to press off the one I did. So it takes a half way desent press. The swing arm is narrower on the 450r then it is on the 400ex. The sprocket hubs are where honda made the differance. The hubs are differant in width. On the back side of the sprocket hub where the seal rides is wider. The only thing you use 400ex is the axle itself, Everything else is 450r brake stay, carrier, sprocket hub, etc. If u press the 400ex hub on the 450r axle it will fit the 400ex to. I did this with 04-05 models so Im not a 100 percent sure if it will work on the 06's. But if you know that the 06's and up 450r axles will fit in the 04-05' 450r's then yes it will work on all of them. Then that will mean the axles can be interchanged through all of the years 450r's and 400ex's. Hope this helps everybody with this guestion.

I almost forgot. There is a retaining ring for the sprocket hub. Just like on the axle nut side. Its so the sprocket hub dont back off. You have to press it down alittle so u can pop off the retaining ring so you then can press it off.

If u switch the sprocket hubs on the axles. You have to make sure the spines on the axle are the same.
Different brand axles have different size/style spines I would think.

Im sorry I did this with factory (OEM) honda axles. Aftermarket axles, Im sure they are differant to like he said. Because differant manufactures cant make the exact product. they have to make differances some where. Which can be anywhere.
