I am going to start racing my 400EX at the MX track next month. It's nothing huge, just a six race amateur level series.

I am trying to decide what to do with my suspension setup though. I really want to switch to +2's with an extended axle and change out the shocks front and rear but don't have the money to do both. My other problem is my 400EX will become my "backup" trail quad later in the year when I get my 450R so I don't want to set it up specifically for MX since it will be used for XC/Desert later.

Right now I have stock arms and axle with Rec series Elkas in front (no adjustments or rezzies) and an Elka rebuilt rear. Should I do +2's with an axle, +1's and new shocks, leave it how it is?

Thanks :)

I'd go with +2 and an adjustable axle. Then when you get the R u can buy some 4-1 rims for the ex and narrow it up.

Is this your first year mx racing? Will you be racing a beginner or "C" class? It sounds like you plan to get a 450r to be your mx quad, correct? If all this is true, you could probably just race your 400 as it is (I'd suggest getting 18" tires) and still be competitive in a beginner class. It won't be a "sweet" ride for the season, but it will save you money and make you a better rider when you switch to an mx built 450. That's just my opinion, good luck.

That's what I started to think too. Yes, this will be my first year racing and the 450R will become a MX quad when I get it.

What exactly will going to a 20" front / 18" rear tire setup do for me? I know you don't need the ground clearance for MX but I guess I never figured out why they run smaller tires.

Running the smaller tires lower your center of gravity and make your quad more stable. If you get smaller tires you also have the ability to put them on your mx 450r when you get it, so you really aren't out any money putting these items on your 400.

Thanks for the tips on the tires. I was thinking the same thing about then putting them on the 450R.

Considering that I will want to put a bunch of money into the 450 down the road, I think I'll just keep my 400 how it is and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.
