I took my own advice and was going to start a cross-compatibility chart for the 250R and need your help. I have a project bike and its getting harder and harder to find aftermarket components for the 250R, plus with eBay sometimes can find deals on parts for other bikes but not sure if they will fit the 250R.
I've started this chart but I don't know what items can be inter-changed between bikes, or even possibly require slight modification.
Let me know if this is worth it or not. It would be very helpful for me.

400ex a-arms will fit a 250r with some spacers
400ex axle will fit in a 250r carrier but it has different wheel hub splines if you use 400ex axle u need 400ex hubs
400ex tierods are the same as 250r tierods
450r shocks fit on 400ex and 250r but are setup wider then both stock and so are much stiffer

right now i am in the process of fitting aftermarket LTR a-arms to my 250. doesn't look like it will be a problem just some custom bushings and ltr spindles and hubs i will let you know how it works. i also have 450r shocks on my 250, bolted right up just raises the ride height a little.

might want to change that 86-89 grab bar up. The 86-87 fits only those years and 88-89 will fit 04-05 450r's

also, we can always use the spindles, hubs, and brakes from a 450R. the spindles are aluminum.

I had a 2004 Z400, and a 88/89 250r AC XC Grab Bar was on without any mods.

Thanks everyone for the information. I've updated the spreadsheet and here it is.
Also, I used 88-89 as the baseline since not everything for the 86-87 fits on the 88-89, hopefull everyone can figure that out.

put a 400ex thumb throttle on today, it will work with stock or larger 39mm pwk carbs and works like a charm and parts are still available for it =)

Anybody know what nerf bars are the closest fit? I've seen some threads that 450R are not close, what about 400EX? I've also read somewhere that Predator nerfs can be adapted fairly easy.

Just an idea.
Is there a possibility of adding measurements and/or part numbers to that spreadsheet?
I found this thread tryin to find the measurements of front 250r wheel bearings. From what I've found out the 86/87 used all 4 bearing of the same size and the 88/89 had smaller outboard bearings, (Like just about every quad).
I can add this little bit of useless info. 400EX uses the same ID front wheel bearing as a 660 Raptor! LOL But they have different spacing. IE; Raptor bearings are farther apart so the hub is effectively "thicker".

450r rear master cylinder works on a 250r. Just need to change the pushrod and drill out the threads on the mounts.

i do believe my bro got some r nerfs (propegs) to fit his ex without much mods.I said without much mods because he's an idiot:D and he dont own a grinder.... just a hammer:p

I had many inquiries for the rear shock mount as pictured...
It is a TRX450R PEP Shockmount that mounts to the grab bar. All hardware is included.

Here is a set of 05 450R A Arms I have up on EBay. This year will fit an 04 0r 05 450R. There is a tape measure indicating their bolting seperation.

according to Pro Armor, the LTZ400 front bumper also fits LTR 450, so im assuming that the ltr 450 bumpers will fit 250r since the ltz 400's do! can someone confirm that?

just checked with Blingstar and the ltr 450 and the ltz 400 have different part numbers, but the part number s for the ltz 400 are the same as the kfx400 and art400......

They do, for a fact, bolt ride up. They are a little stiffer and about 1-2 inches taller ride height, but they bolt right up.
And they are a decent mod if you can't afford aftermarket shocks. I rode a set at the Badlands one weekend and they worked great.

If the LTZ400 front bumper fits a 250R so will a 450R one, because a 450 one will fit a Z400. My brother is using a 450 bumper on is Z now.

How much modification is needed for the 400ex nerfs to work on the 250R frame.. I have picked up a LRD Aluminum 88/89 frame and I am looking for some Nerfs and pegs. Any ideas?

04 05 brake pads work perfect in the 250r front calipers....they are WAY cheaper than the OEM 250r brake pads.

you drill some holes, get enough brackets and cable ties and any plastic with fit :D
pretty sure stock there is not a hole in the frame under the gas tank where he mounted the front fender...

rear cargo rack from prm for trx 450r 04-06 fit but you have to cut the fenders, did it.

I can vouch for a Z400 bumper will bolt to an trx250R without much modification.
The bottom bracket needs 1/4" spacers on each side and the top bracket will need the hole diameters increased to allow for about a 1/16" mis-alignment for the holes, will prolly fit anyway, but makes assembly much easier.

I bought a scrape piece of 1/4" thick aluminum. Then used a 1" hole saw to drill out the spacers. Enlarged the center hole with a 10mm drill bit and installed them. They work great and look better then a stack of washers.

Good, post'em when you get'em. I was looking at one of those too, only black textured.
If you can get a round file, use it to wallow out the top holes a skosh, and install the bottom first then rotate to the top holes should line right up then.

Its installed!!! Man this thing is freakin sweet!! The welds are beautiful and the thing is VERY lightweight! Im not gna go step by step on how to install a 450r bumper cause troybilt said it exactly! only thing is i didnt have to make the hole bigger, the mounting holes are slotted so you have some wiggle room. The key is to start all bolts loosely and tighten sort in a criss cross. Here are some pics of different angles. Hope this helps everyone!

As far as the rear goes jason86PRP250r posted a pic of his YZ426F rear conversion here... http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=155875&perpage=13&pagenumber=3 using the front caliper.
I talked to him on the phone and he was very helpfull with my conversion. It was a little tricky in some spots as i had to take a file and remove some clearence issues inside the caliper but it wasent a real big deal just time consuming (file,mount,check tollerences...repeat) Like he states you do have to ovalize one of the bolt holes on the brake stay but that was easy.
Im really surprised that more people didnt pick up on this uber trick because i have 5 rear calipers and they are all absolute garbage and i picked up the YZ caliper off E-Bay for $28.00 in almost mint condition.
I wish i could take credit for this but jason86PRP250r has in my opinion the 250R chassis trick of the decade.

i cant get my 250r shock in teh 400ex with teh stock 400ex.. the bottom "fork" is too short... what do i do?

Im doing a 450r swinger mod and need a new pivot bolt do you guys think I can use a 450r one? Im assuming yes anyone know. Also im converting to the 05' rear linkage with a GT Thunder Link i picked up for $60 I'll let you know hoe it goes. This is on an 87' frame

The 88-89 swinger was an inch shorter than the 86-87. it may be to correct suspension geometry.

450r pivot bolt will be fine.
I have a lonestar 450r DC6 linkage on my 86 250r. You will need to make up some bushings. If I remember correctly, they are 14mm inside diameter and 17 mm outside diameter. Then you can use the stock 86 250r bolt at the frame side of the linkage mount.
As far as the shock, I used a stock lenth 250r shock with another custom bushing at the lower mount. I don't remember the specs on that one.

Yea I was going to weld some spacers on each side of the frame mount to take up the gaps on each side. as far as bushings you mean the bushings in the linkage right? where did you find the material for that?

I have some go kart spindles that are 17mm od. I had a local machine shop bore a 14mm hole though the center, as far as the lenth, I made them the same as the 450r bushings.
I didn't weld the spacers in, just in case I needed to go back to stock later. They don't have to be as exact, just as long as the are 14mm id, I think mine are 25mm or so for the od.
If you want to try to cut down some spindles, I may have some left.

It would be worth trying. The linkage I bought didn't come with the bushings.

Alright, got it all together it's LOW. With stock 450r linkage. havent got the thunder link yet. Did it lower yours? It doesnt hit anything when the suspension travels but ? Maybe long travel shock? Looks bad ***** though.

Just put the GTT linkage on and my shock bottoms out with me jumping on the back of it. the the stock 450r linkage its ok. What are my options on the shock? aftermarket, long travel....?

Your options are pretty open. I just know what I tried.
stock 86 250r linkage+stock 250r shock+07 450r swingarm=too tall
stock 07 450r linkage+stock 06 450r shock+07 450r swingarm=too low
stock 07 450r linkage+stock 250r shock+07 450r swingarm=too tall
Lonestar DC6 linkage+stock 250r shock+07 450r swingarm=just right
If the height is right and everything cycles fine with the GTT linkage, you may just need the shock revalved and resprung for the setup.

My seat with the GTT linkage stock 250r shock is about 28" that about good or is that too low? Where can I get the shock re-valved re-sprung?

You will want ro go by frame height instead of seat height. Depends on what you are doing with it. For XC I tried to run 7 1/2-8" high at the footpegs and about 3/4" higher at the front motor mount. That is with me on the bike.
C&D racing can take care of your shock work.

FYI, dog bones will work between models. I ran the longer one on my '89 based bike when I had a stock frame. It lowers the bike, and you have to specify what swingarm/linkage when you get your shock valved. Ever see those adjustable dog bones made by Dura Blue??

Yea I've seen it but im using 450r linkage I got it taken care of anyways. I bought the elka LT 450r linkage and LT shock combo works great!!!!

i heard 400ex stems work on all R's but could be wrong there could be a roll thing where it has to be roll but besides that can anyone confirm
and to the thread starter ill help u fill in the sheet i got some testing to do also
3rd 450r shocks will fit and work great after they are revslved, they fit stock but i dont know how the perform

a 300ex lonestar axle will work. you have to machine the stock 250r brake hub down( the part that goes toward the lock nut. machine it all the way down to the hub itself. im running this setup now. had a bent r axle and agood 300 axle' so i figured what the heck. it works

I know that this is not the exact topic but here are two part numbers that I use on my R
PT907257 5908-VAW This is a part number for bearings that will fit the aftermarket rear bearing carrier usually at auto parts stores for around $9 They are not sealed so they need to be packed with grease and maintained but they hold up well.
ES2074r This is a part number for Ford courier tie rod ends that work as balljoints. I took my stock lower a arms to a machinist and had them cut a machined so I can use them in both upper and lower a arms. They also fit Burgard arms as well.
I'm also running 450 front shocks on my 87 with no mods.

did those ford tie rod ends install into the top a arms with out any mods? i may have to replace my upper ones since the boot ripped. will there be any issues with using the ford one on top and stock on the bottom?

On the burgard arms, there was no modification at all.
On the stock ones, I had to file the threads flat on the top and bottom of the tie rod end to fit. Take time to make sure the angle is correct. I've also heard of people drilling the flat parts out of the upper a arms. Other than that, you may need some 16mm nuts as the stock nuts are 14mm. I found these tie rod ends for about $13 at autozone.
I've never tried to run the stock bottoms with these at top. But I can't see why it would make a difference.

I am building up an old 250R
I have heard that you could run all 250R rear axle and brake parts or all 400EX. But you had to run all of one or the other.
I had all 400EX parts in mine. Got my hands on an RPM adjustable axle. I made the 250R axle work with the 400ex brake parts and axle nut.
All I did was make a 1/8" thick spacer to go between the axle nut and brake hub. Seems like it will work just fine. But it will be a long time before I will get to really try it out because I have a long way to go before I will be able to ride.
Now I may still take all the 400 brake parts and axle nut back off and find all 250R stuff to put back on just because. But I do not see any problems at all with what I did on mine. The only real reason I wanted to run the 400 brake parts is because I just already had them and that was that many less parts I have to buy.
Well I just went outside and and put the 400 caliper on. Found a problem. The caliper sits so far back on the brake stay that it covers the allen bolts on the carrier. So if you want to adjust the chain, you have to remove the caliper. Other than that, it shold work fine.
Guess I am going to be putting all 250R back on it.

i heard 400ex stems work on all R's but could be wrong there could be a roll thing where it has to be roll but besides that can anyone confirm

3rd 450r shocks will fit and work great after they are revslved, they fit stock but i dont know how the perform

Or just swap the shaft out of your 250r rear master cylinder. It's the same other then the lenth. Just pull the boot off and one snapring to change them.

I had a set of AC Racing nerf bars without pegs on my 86 250r. I bought a set of AC Racing nerf bars with pegs and sold the nerf bars without pegs to a friend of mine. He had a 04 Z400 and they bolted right up with no mods. So maybe Z400 nerfs will work?

the upper ltr450 a-arms will fit with very little mod but the lowers wont even come close. :(

I have put both 400EX and 450R swing arm bolts in my 86' frame. Both worked just fine. I ended up with a 450R bolt in mine because for some reason they are much cheaper than a 400EX or 250R bolt.

i have a 400ex steering sten in my 250r and it works, but the bump stop is diffrent so it takes some modification or it will hit the stop after the bars are only slightly turned. easy mod if you have an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel and a welder.

you know i started lookin on ebay and z400 front shocks look VERY similar to the 450r shocks. maybe t hey will fit which would be sweet because they are more like the yfz shocks, not as stiff or tall. anyone help me out with this?

okay since the list is not listing parts for 86-87 250r I believe it is still not finished, and also to many people saying the same thing, 450r can be multiple bikes, yfz, ltz, trx, and more:
450r front shocks is a bolt on for both 86-87 and 88-89, yes?
400ex front shocks are a direct bolt on yes?
400ex a-arms are a easy bolt on with spacers for both years yes?
trx450r front bumper easy to bolt on with space yes? what about the 400ex front bumper?
400ex plastics are hard but a simple plastics to put on, must make mount for the front fenders, must use the 400ex seat and must use the 250r latch. also must grind the gas tank cover to accept the 250r gas tank.
I have no clue about 450r plastics but I would not do it because of the fact of it being a nightmare to take it back apart.
trx450r swinger will work but you will have trouble with linkage and moding the dust caps to work.
I would like know more but the sheet is not doing it for me.

ok if the 450r front shocks fit the 88-89 250r, and 86-87 shocks fit the 88-89 250r. then the 450r front shocks fit the 86-87 250r. same with the 400ex. they fit all years.
I have only heard that the bumper will work. somone needs to confirm. I did not put anything on there that you needed to make a custom frame to make it fit. the 400ex bumper only needs a few washers on the bottom mount on each side.
The 450r swingarm will work if you haev a adjustible linkage.
the 400ex a arms will work with a few washers, nothing too major.

about the same. the 400ex swiger is not much of an upgrade though. the 450r swingarm is your best bet.

the swinger is fine. the issue is the linkage. the angle is wrong between the 250r mount and the 400ex linkage. it will bind the shock, so the linkage has to be custom.

Those are factory 400ex plastcics, shaved with a CF hood.
Im going to say thats a 250r frame. 87-89 I think (did 87 come with the square frame?).
At any rate, those ARE 400ex plastics, this I know for sure. And they aren't lakers, just OEM stuff.

I am sure this has been mentioned some where before but I put an aluminum shifter from rocky mountain for a 450R on my R project the other night and it looks like it will work just fine. It sticks out a little bit more but not much. It was cheap and looks pretty good for what it is.

i put 400ex plastic on my 88 r in the past it took 1 night, nothing to major i just did it all on mine own with no instructions, you need 400ex seat and all the plastic, but i made my 88 hood fit with headlight and it looked factory when done. i might do this again with my new r project i got

450R will fit except: (I have an 06 450r)
1. Bottom holes need 3 washers on each side for spacers.
2. Top holes need 1 washer on each side for spacer or bend the ears in to fit.
3. One set of the holes either top or bottom needs to be elongated roughly 1-2 mm to clear.
I just checked with my 450r I just bought.
z400

However!!!
z400 on 450r => won't work unless you spread the upper ears apart, the Z is narrower by about 2mm on each side on the top mounting ears. The holes line up though.

yes the hood will work i have done this years ago.. but it looked good and never had a problem. just set it on the 400 fenders center it perfect and trace lightly with a pencil then cut it out in the midle about a half inch or so on the inside of your line and even more for the tabs where it mounts, just get some 400 fenders and try it, it works and its not hard when i did it i was young and dumb and it still looked good

ive got an stainless braded line off an arctic cat 4x4 for the rear brake on my 250 and a 03 suzuki eiger 400 4x4 front rotor will bolt right up on the 250 rear rotor hub and its the right size and is non vented so pads last longer if you xc or see mud quite often

One thing I noticed, kid of a small thing, but the 450r rubber grommets that are used on the sub frame for the seat also work on the 250r. THought I'd pass that on.... I've got both bikes next to each other and torn down, if anyone needs me to check something...

I compared my 05 hubs and spindles to the 89 250r hubs and spindles so we can put the spindle debate to rest. It seems I may have been somewhat wrong on this topic in the past. To my defense I was comparing the 06 to the 89 trx... now I have an 05 and there is some interesting similarities...
It seems by all accounts the 04/05 450r closely mimics the 89 250r. Same swingarm length and relatively same spindle dimensions... 10mm difference in offset, or leverage. Probably do to the extra material needed for the aluminum vs. cast steel.
Measured the offset:
05 450r spindle ~50.8mm offset
89 250r spindel ~40mm offset
Hubs - same offset, but the 450r hubs are recessed to make up for the 10mm increase in offset vs. the 89 spindles..
So in the end, the 04/05 450r hubs and spindles should be close to the performance as the 89 hubs and spindle combo. The differences are relatively marginal, you do gain a 1lbs or so of weight differential bw. the aluminum 450r spindles vs. 89 cast steel.

I took the fireball +2 arms off of my old bike and they currently reside on my wife's artic cat DVX400 which is the same as the suzuki z400 and kawi kfx400. They were a direct bolt on accept for the tie rod to steering stem joint. I had to use a washer to get the ball joint tight. These arms have bushings on the lowers and heims on the top. but they bolted right in and work great. So if 250R aftermarket arms will bolt right onto a Z400 then the z400 arms should go the otherway also. Oh, I used the z400 spindles and hubs, and the galfer lines from the R. Also I took the stock Z400 shocks to put onto a show bike 250r for my mom and they too worked and looked great.

The arms I had bolted right into the Z, I could have used a couple of washers as spacers but it didn't seem to need them.
I need to measure the swinger, I don't think anyone would want to convert to a z400 swinger, maybe the other way. It would be difficult due to the shock linkage set up. The pegs on the Z are more like a banshee than an R. the heel guards I don't think would mount at all. If someone had an 86 / 87 frame it is possible the z pegs would mount at somewhat of a downward - forward angle.
Does anyone know if a trx 450 anti-vibe will fit a 250R ? I think they are similar accept for the R has a nut on the bottom of the stem and the 450 has a bolt. I have a 450 anti-vibe stem but I don't have a 450. I picked it for an 89 build that never happened.
I also picked up a TT swinger for the same build. I never figured out if either would work in an R.
Does anyone know?

I've got a good one for all of you....
It has come to my attention that a certain pro rider for Yamaha back in 02 had been winning several titles on a Laeger Hybrid with a CR500 link. Due to the OEM frame rule, Laeger was out. Yamaha went to him to see what kind of quad he wanted and he told them this one (the laeger bike). So after alot of R&d the yfz450 was born... based off of a Laeger 250R. Anyone else ridden a YFZ and felt stangely comfortable... Hmm wonder why?
I ended up with some YFZ parts and it appears that the rear linkage is based off of a CR500. The oem YFZ shock has the resevoir cast onto it which would make it hard to use in an R. But the linkage is designed to be centered not offset like Laeger's.
Someone could make an interesting conversion with a YFZ linkage.
It would work the same as a CR link but without changing the upper shock mount.

ATV sway bars are for the most part universal. The bar itself is basically the same, different manufacturers have different widths. Also manufacturer's may have multiple widths themselves. Generally wider for longer arms. Most links mount via a longer bolt through the lower shock mount. For YFZ's and also for Laeger protrax arms, Rath makes a billet bracket that mounts to the upper control arm to attach the link to. Nearly every atv sway bar has the mounting bracket for the frame clampped to the main tube. These can be clampped anyware on the main tube. These are generally designed to bolt through the front bolt on the upper A-arm. I have seen clamps that were modified to bolt to the frame as well. Basically a sway bar can be made to fit almost any ATV by simply modifying the mounting clamps.

I know this has been covered some but I never found a definite answer, awhile back in a different post a guy put 04/5 450r swinger shock gtt xc link etc on his 250r an 87 I believe, I searched but could not find, while reading this 19 page post the best I found was a combo of mixed 250/450 parts.
I talked to a guy at ars/fx and he s running 450r swinger link and shock all from ars on his r, I can positively say the year.
My first ? Is does it matter if u use the 04/5 or the 06 swinger and shock.
I got an extra swinger n shock n link all oem for an 06.
But I was wanting to run my laeger , ars/fx and custom elk long travel rear end on my r.
If I can't I'm going to go the gt thunder route.
It's just no one has said
I used these parts -------- and they work, I ve seen them on peoples bikes I just wanted to know what you used and if it was a combo from both bikes and if you r using a 450 lt linkage are u running a 450 lt shock built for that link especially for the 250r or are you running the 450r shock as it was built for the 450?

That was probably mine, I used all 450 rear end, with GT Thunder link, I din't use the stock 450 shock as the ressy on it seemed to get in the way or pushed the intake tube in more than I wanted so I bought a Axis 450 rear shock. I did change my frame mount for the link to match the 450 alittle more. This quad handles like a dream, will post a couple pics on the XC thread that's on the front page today.

For all those that upgrade to the 400ex spindles, I have found out that it is confirmed that 04-08 YFZ450 calipers bolt up directly to those spindles so that way you don't need caliper adapters, you get newer brakes and dual piston.

yfz calipers work on 400ex spindles. the bolt patterns match and the pads grab in the right place. the only concern I have is that the lines appear to be kinda vulnerable. mine seem to be dragging a little but I haven't rode the quad yet. I hope they are floating calipers hadn't checked that out yet

I got a set of 450R rath heel guards and pegs ill try and see if i can fit easily on the 250R,
im taking a few more things off first so ill know by say any ways,
but what kind of custom brackets are needed for the 450r or 400ex nerfs
i want a set of those new housers so
i m not shelling out 500 to find out they dont work so who has put 450 or 400 nerfs on a 250 and how involved was it, was it having a machine shop make a small bracket, if so u still got a diagram etc?
just need a little help here

i see nothing on footpeg compatibility. i know 86 style is a long shot, but the newer style should have some other bikes that will bolt up.

anyone got any mesurements on the houser nerfs?
most aftermarket frames are off 88/9 unless specified so are any of these cross compatabilities not gonna work on a laeger frame

I was told by Walsh that Z400 spindles bolt rite up,in fact they said that the absolute best MX 250r setup is +4+1 arms,4/1 offset wheels and Z400 spindles.The arm location on the spindles improved bump steer and overall handling!Anyone else hear of this?

i was under the impression the LTR spindles and hubs were the trick set-up...

You are probably right.The Guy I spoke to used to build 250Rs with Walsh and he hadent been involved for several years,thats before the LTR came out.I will either be running LTR/Z400 spindles or 400EX...Not sure why this info is not on the chart?If I seen it there it would have saved me alot of phone calls...UPDATE ALERT!!!lol........:devil:

You will need to make sure the aarms work with the LTR/Z400 spindles... Walsh designs the aarms to work with those spindles specifically... just a word of caution before someone goes out and buys a set of either and then may or may not be able to set the caster and camber properly....

Anybody have a part number and manufacturer of the dust seals in front hubs? They are the same for 400EX, 450R, and 250R. They are costly for what they are...I need a couple sets.

Sooooo....
The Inboard Seals are all the same....it's the outer (closest to the rim) That change....not entirely compatable unless ya get the correct YEAR of the 400ex

Found out this past weekend, that you can in fact use a 450r throttle, with a 250r cable. You will need to file the lever inside down to get the carb to open completely, and cut the wires that go to the throttle. Other than that it was pretty simple.
Also of note, the buttons on the 450r kill/light/start switch will work on the stock 250r kill/light switch. The actual buttons not the housing. off-run-off switch will work as well....

Troy does the 450 kill switch housing hit the clutch handle?
Ive got a housing with a hot start I was going to dremil the hot start lever off,
but if it hits l the cluch lever I wont waste my time

Sorry for the confusion, I didn't use the housing, I took the switch completely apart and reused the buttons themselves with the 250 killswitch housing. (this one was missing some buttons they were faded originally)

Ive got a broken 250 housing and im thinking about cutting the hot start lever off a old 450r housing and spicing the 250 light and kill connectors on it, but im not sure if the 450 housing will hit the 250 clutch lever,if the 250 lever does hit the 450r housing I guess I could also use the 450 clutch perch and lever

I figured I would give cutting the hot start lever off an old 450r kill a try....it came out pretty good for a quick try, if I spent a little more time it would be perfect,
but Its definitely better then spending a hundred bucks for a new looking switch

The 2008 Yamaha Rhino Gas cap fits the 86-87 fuel tank. I used the project 321 cap from my wifes Rhino
