08 L/C DRX50 what octane fuel? Stock.
I ask cause we just out w/ the new Drx today and at higher revs it has what SOUNDs like spark knock to me.
Or am I getting something else from perhaps jetting?
Today is the first day we even started it lol and just something I noticed.
For the record its about 40F here today.... we just couldnt wait anymore and damn is Oliver pleased as hell!!!
Right now the quad is on the lowest needle position, stock pilot, and 105 main..I only notice the issue when the throttle is damn near pinned.
Thanx

Thanx Can you explain better the clip position on the needle? Does it happen only when you stab the throttle (Can you work it up easy to get past the stubble?). Have you tried to go up on your main?

It's probably not the octane of your fuel. If it's brand new you don't want to jet it until it's well broke in.

I have the needle at the richest position. It happens at 3/4-full throttle.
The more I think about it I suppose due to the details in the last sentance I assume its the main and I suppose its most likely running rich.
Honestly the first thing that came to my mind w/out thinking about it when it first happened (first time I revved it up) was like the reeds or piston slap. But its been run alot today and Im leaning (no pun intened..lol) towards main jetting.
I must mention that when I checked the main before running it it had a 87.5 main jet and I put in a 105 due to advice I received from a reputable member/dealer here and other posts Ive read stating the 105 is stock in the 50's. Really the weather here right now is not what we'll be usually operating in, we (mainly me)couldnt wait anymore.
By the way if photbucket would work Id post a couple pics.

a rich main jet will not cause a ping or knock sound, and the 105 main is probably not rich at 40degrees. If detonation is occuring it would most likely be due to an overheating issue , such as air in coolant system or coolant not circulating properly. Does quad run clean and smooth and quiet at 1/2 throttle ? is this noise present allways ? hot or cold ? atfull throttle as well as 3/4 ? premium pump gas should be fine , but check compression because I have heard some left the factory with the high comp head (around 195psi) it would need race fuel for this head. 155 or 160 psi stock on most. also confirm that exhaust bolts are tight. does it make same sound when running free wheeling on a stand? (no load)

Ill check a couple of those things tomorrow and give you a call Marc.
I definatly didnt think we were actually running rich and I should have clarified my concern due to the fact that it is so cold here (40F is actually warm here right now lol) and its running the 105 main.
I do remember now that I couldnrt get to one of the three silencer bolts so thats possable but it really sounded like from the top end/ front of the quad area.

With it being so cold (40 is still pretty cold for jetting conversation purposes) the first thing you should do is to pull the plug and check before riding too much more. Some will say tan is as lean as you want to go but each person has his or her own comfort level. Pulling the plug on those is real easy and would help everyone help you determine the problem.

what oil are you running? for the cold temps you could be sufferig from seperation , i know you stated it was about 40 , but overnight im guessing that its much colder, castor 927 seperates at cold temps and could possibly cause these symptoms just my 2 cent

Ill check some of these things and go from there.. thanx guys!
The weather here is still quite warm today but the quad can definatly not come out (very wet and muddy now) so Ill get on it and get back asap. Its Michigan here so theres no telling when that may be...

I am referring to the 2 Ex bolts at the head not the silencer, they need to be removed , one at a time apply high heat locktite and install, if they get loose it makes noise in the engine area.

Well as far as exhaust bolts go it was even at first startup (that I heard the noise) and the bolts were on the literal recheck torque list and Im posative theyre tight
Spoke to ya today Marc and I think we've figured out that mine probly came w/ the high comp head and I need to get the other....
....Ill be checking compression tomorrow and let ya know.
