i recently bought a used 2001 400ex totally stock in really nice shape, i keep reading on the site about valve adjustments, how do i know if this needs to be done, how will this help, and is it hard to do??

it is realy easy to do.
And you see if the cuad needed only if you hear like the cars that little sound of tiki tiki when the engine is running.
I do it my self and it was really easy.

If you don't know how much time is on the motor, you oughta do a valve adjustment. If they get loose, you can hear it ticking, but the real danger that is they might get tight. When they get tight, the valves might not seal properly, and they will get destroyed by the leaking exhaust gas. Called "burning a valve".

I would use the one here, very easy to follow and with pics. Just did my 05, and my buddy did his 00 to the one here.
