Can stock 300EX front shocks be taken apart to remove the spring?

I was going to say no.. thought you were gonna sk about rebuilding.

Use a spring compressor to compress the springs away from the non-shock end. If it will come apart, it will unscrew where the shaft connects to the eye. It would unscrew from the shaft. Use a belt wrench to hold the shaft so you don't marr it.

I just did fronts and backs on my 250x because i wanted to get the rust pits on my chrome cleaned up.
What i did was first move the rubber cushion thing thats on the top of the shaft down and out of my way .
Then set the springs on the loweset possible setting and took a big flathead screwdriver and inserted it in the gap on the top plate and pried down on the spring just enough for the top cap to slide past the shock shaft. Waaalah!! pretty simple actually.
But be very careful about where you have your digits while sliding the top cap out of the way.
The first one was a bit hairy but the last 2 were cake !
