Alright guys. I have a 2001 440 that I completely built myself. Its got a Namura 440 Kit, HD Studs, 450 Timing chain, Uni filter, 450r Carb. All the good stuff. Well I bought this POS Sparks pipe and fixed it up to the best I could. Got a new cap and core and newly packed it. Well I started the bike up today and it idles, but it pops while it idles. It`ll stay running but it`s like pop-pop-pop-pop-pop. It also smokes pretty damn bad. As well as if I put my hand behind the exhaust pipe, I can REALLY feel the exhaust coming out on my hand, I mean HARD.

Any suggestions as what to do, jetting, or what?

i would of stuck to the stock carb for the break in. the 450 carb can be a joke to jet. it takes alot of messin with.

is your smoke blue or black?

Also, bike will sometime run for a minute, idly popping pretty hard, then REV up really high WITHOUT me touching it, and then pop and die. Any suggestions?

sounds like jetting to me. what size jet are you running?? i had that exhaust on my 400, stage 1 cam, 11:1 440 kit, rev box, pro flow adapter, and i was around a 180 or so.

as cold as it is you should be one around a 55 pilot and it throw in a big main like around a 190-200 for break in. Move your needle up if you havent already. The 450r carb is an awesome upgrade and i would keep it on for sure.

sure sounds like a jetting issue. the pilot jet and adjustment is lean it sounds.

I remember when my Eichner carb did this and it was a combo of the jetting and Idle screw. Once I got those dialed in it ran great. Play with your jetting and Idle and it will all come together once it's right.

Just a thought but the air box intake tube isn't leaking air is it?

Its possible it could be leaking, I`m going to have to check that, right now I think I have a 200 main, and a 50, MAYBE 52 pilot. What should I throw in to start, and also what should I set my needle at?

the rev without you touching it is a sign of running lean. Also the popping i would bet on it because its running lean. Get a different pilot or adjust the A/F screw (not sure if the 450r carb has an air or a fuel screw)

mine was running hard on idle like this to when I put the 450 carb. on -the throttle cable was pulled super tight and it was stuck in 1/4 throttle I just loosened it up with the nut adjustment
