my front tires are getting real bald and i want to replace them but i dont know which tire to go with. i was considering either the kenda klaw xc or the razr or razr 2 because those are some of the few i have been told good things about. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Go with whatever you find the better deal on. Razr2's are my favorite fronts, but klaws are nice too.

I just ordered some klaws from a member on the site actually.

I'd get the Razr2s. I'm very impressed with them on my 400.

i do all types of riding. i live in north pa so i go on trails, fields, dirt roads, some paved (try to stay off those lol). basically i want an all purpose tire thats going to meet my expectations. oh i also race friends not on tracks but in open fields and on roads so the razr 2 sounds like a good choice. anyone know of a good tire to go on the back if i was to get razr 2 fronts?

I just ordered a set of Rzr 2's to replace my stock fronts. I live in SW Pa and it sounds like we ride similiar areas. I bought my ex 5 mos ago with rzr2 rears installed. No compaints, wearing good, no punctures/tears, dont clog with mud, great forward bite, seems a little hard to break em loose to slide the rear tho. Course ive got a stock motor, and im not a very good rider....yet:D

and what sizeis good? i do trail, track, pretty much all kinds of riding. would 21s be good? i have stock right now, i think there 22s? they seem a little big. they make 21s for stock sized rims right? and one more question, do they make 18s in the back for stock sized rims, or would i have to get new rims too?

22 for trails 20 for track and 21 for both. A good compromise.

For the back, do 20. 18 is too small for trails and 22 is too big for track.

I ordered the 22-7x10 for mine. All my buddies ride ute's, Couldn't afford to lose any clearance in the woods. Got 20s in rear. gettin ready to drop a tooth ft sprocket.

02-26-2008, 07:23 PM
I run 21" fronts and 20" rears and its great for the trails. The lower front makes it handle a bit better and you still have plenty of clearance.

yeah i want to get the razr 2s but im not sure of the size. i have had people tell me that 23s turn the best and ive had people tell me 21s turn the best so idk. i would think the 23 would work the best in trails right?

23" fronts are so funny looking its like a lifted quad. My friend a while back got a good deal on some 23" ITP's and when we saw him riding up to us as we were sitting in the pit we started looking like what did he do to his quad. it was like a monster truck 400ex. It had beast ground clearance but it felt a lot tippier being that much higher.

the only reason i was thinking about 23s is because i have 22 in mud tires for the snow season and my 22 fronts handle like crap. i dont know if thats because they are so bald but it handles better with my 20s on the back. its like if i have a taller front than back, it does nothing, i just see my front end slide. im getting 20 in kenda klaws (i think) so would a 22 or 21 e the better choice?

I just got a new set of ITP GNCC tires and i am very impreesed with them. I got 21x7x10 for the front and 21x11x9 for the rear, the front seem to be taller than a normal 21 though.

I accidentally got the 23's but I don't regret getting them at all. They do handle nicely. My next set of fronts are the same as I recommend and that would be 22s. The 21 rears were fully intentional and I'm lovin' those.

LOL, time to bust out a pic again...........

so does everyone think that 23' razr 2 fronts are too big? also i ride on roads a lot of do you think that kenda knarly or razr rears are the better choice?

ive heard good things about the kenda gnarly, anyone have experience with the tires. ive also heard that the original gnarlys do not have any side bite and that the gnarly xc is much better. anyone want to add to that comment?

I wouldn't say 23" is a bad choice, I have no desire to get rid of mine. As you can see in the pic they don't look like monster tires but 22" IMO is the ideal choice. You get a good ride out them, plenty of ground clearance and good steering response. Road riding is no good for any ATV tire but I'd go with the Knarly myself, Kenda typically makes a harder compound tire.

The Knarly (with a K) and the Knarly XC's main difference is a more flexible lug to bite more. The added flex is good for XC conditions. Side bite is the same. I personally love them but I don't care for side bite anyway.

23's are like monster truck tires! My buddy had 23's and 22's on his 400ex and hated them.

Do this instead:

Front- Maxxis Razr2 21/7/10

Rear- Maxxis Razr 20/11/9

This is the perfect combo for most trail quads around 400cc's.

yeah im sure a 21 razr 2 front and 20 razr rear would work well together. so in your opinion do u prefer the knarly original or xc. You said that the xc has more flex which is nice for trails but will it get worn out faster that the original. personally i dont carry about side bite either because i love to kick my quad side ways. 1 reason i liked the xc is because they come in a 21' height and i cant find the originals in a 21' height...only 20 and 22.

allhondaman
02-28-2008, 07:32 PM
trxracer1 i see that u said your knarlys are the original and are 21' height....do you know where i could find a pair of those? i have been looking on rockymountainatv and i found the original in 20 and 22 while i found the xc in 20-22' height

allhondaman
02-29-2008, 02:16 PM
if i cant find the original in the 21' height would the 20s be tall enough for trail? i hate 22s...i already have a pair of mud 22s and hate them.

so do you think you like the xc more than the original. i like the looks of the original more but unsure of what size to go with. either xc 21' or original 20' not sure yet

I understand the back sizes, smaller; higher RPMs. Bigger; speed.

But what difference does the front make?! Honestly.

if you ride woods or rocky areas, you will like 23 in the front, had 23 inch razr1 on the front and 20 inch razr1 on the back, loved this combo,[ did look a little funny from the side ] was going the same tire for replacement till I put razr2 on the front of my wife's 300ex, when it comes to turning abilities there is no better front tire for trail riding. sorry no exp. with the kenda gnarly, but have heard nothing but good on them.

I just got some razrs for X-Mas, and I love them! There (back) 20-11/9's

There great.

Also remember, gearing.

If you get a smaller tire, say 18, you may want to go with a stock 15t or 16t.

But if you get a bigger like a 22, you may want somthing like a 14t

(With the 18 in the rear and the 16t sprocket, people may call me crazy, but with my 20's and a 15t, I was about 9000 rpms in about 1/8 mile, or less! But once I put my e-series on w/ 12 disks for all that top end, I go a 1/2 mile and I still can't reach my top speed. the small tire offers great bottom end, and the exhaust its top/mid, so it all ='s out. Wait, why am I talking about exhausts? lol)

Got my new ft 22" razr2s mounted saturday. Rode them sat, sun, and today and Wow, what a difference from the stock tires. even as muddy as it is here in s.w PA right now, they just grab a line and hold it. Might be my imagination but they seem to have softened up the ride in my front as well

I got my 23" Trac Star's mounted a couple days ago. Here is a comparison pic of the stock fronts vs the Trac Star's. I'm going with a 22" Trac Star in the rear, but they are on national backorder until the end of March. I'll post up pics and riding opinions when the rears come in. I only trail ride, so I'm looking forward to the extra ground clearance.

No, I haven't received them yet. The 22" rears are on national backorder according to my local dealer & Chaparral-who I ordered them from. They said expect them the first week or two of April. I'll be sure to report back then.

I have the 400EX torn down for cleaning & maintenance, so I haven't even ridden on the front Trac Stars yet . :(

Did you get the RAZR 2's? I'm not sure how long I'm willing to wait for the 22" rear Trac Stars to become available & may buy a different type of rear tire. What would everyone recommend for general trail riding? It needs to be available in a 22" tall rear tire & 6 ply.

EDIT: I just called ITP to get an estimate as to when the rear 22" Trac Star might be available and they said it could be "months". They have a problem with their tooling & still don't have all the issues worked out
