i have a few questions about my 426 i just picked up. i have done a search, but it still leaves me somewhat in the dark. first off, what kinda exhaust fits a 400EX frame the best. it has a pro circuit exhuast, but i dont know what it came from. second, this thing has 2 choke knobs on the carb, which one is the choke and i think one is the hot start. third off, how do the auto decompressors hold up on a HotCam. it has the cable style and i dont know how far out to hold it.

the red knob on the carb is the hotstart.Ayz450/yfz450 head pipe will work and the silencer will need to be custom built

Hot start is only for when it's hot. Unless the 426f has an auto decompression cam it should have a small lever on top of the clutch. That the compression relief. To clear out the engine, hold the lever and kick over the engine a few times. Once your done bring the bike up to compression stroke [when the kickstart gets very hard to move.] Pull the small lever and move the kickstart an inch down. Now you're ready to kick it. They require a full strong kick. They're not 2-strokes. If its cold prime the engine by pushing the thumb throttle twice. It should start.

Just saw that you have hotcams so you don't need a starting drill. Don't pull the red knob on the carb unless the engine is warm. That knob pulls cold air into the carb to help a warm engine start.

well, i think the motor is all stock. because it does have the decompression lever on the clutch master cylinder (hydraulic clutch). but i watched a video from dubach racing on how to kick this monster, and i got it now. starts first good kick. another thing, i have seen some hybrids on here that use oil tanks, do i need one or is it just an option or w/e??

With out an oil tank, A (wet sump system) engine holds
Less than a quart of oil.
Oil that is also shared with the transmission and the clutch pack.
Alot of heat and clutch contamination, the oil needs to be change out more offten.

I have use an oil tank with an oil cooler.
2.7 quarts.

and...go get yourself either a hotcams or yz450 exhaust cam, go to thumpertalk, has step by step instructions on how to install, makes it a hell of alot easier.

I used all yz426 exhaust. No mods no 450 quad parts. the yz426 exhaust mounted fine with no mods. White bros header and muffler and stock yz426 midpipe. All I had to do was shorten the back of the muffler a couple inches so the mounts lined up and then run a 1" spacer between the muffler and sub frame mount and it mounted fine. I also shortened the end of the muffler 3" just for sound and looks. I ran no air box so I dont know if thats is why I got away with no exhaust mods or not. Air box may have been in the way if it was on but idk.

Ya. It worked for me on my 400ex. All "I" had to do was shorten the muffler a little to make the muffler mount line up with the frame mount and had to run a 1" spacer.

im not sure whats on the bike as far as what it came from, im thinking yfz450. but if anyone has a exhaust for one of these, i will trade a magura hydraulic clutch for a exhaust.
