any year 450r shock will work on the 400. they are a huge improvement over stock. yes they are a bit stiff, but if your on a budget, they're great... plus you can have them revalved to make basicly aftermarket. the rear 450r shock is really no better than the 400ex rear shock. it's not worth changing out.

At a minumum you will need to get different springs for them to work properly on your 400. This makes them work better over the bumps and still be able to jump the heck out of it!

IF you are seriously considering this upgrade I am selling my like new 2007 450R shocks(new 07 take-offs I have used on 2 or 3 weekends) with new Works Triple Rate Sping Kit (used one weekend) for $375. They are already machined to fit a 400 perfectly without modding or messing with your 400's frame.

A long time ago, in 2004, Dirtwheels did a shootout. The YFZ against the 450r.

Well, they said the 450r was really plush and great for XC, but the YFZ was the complete opposite. Really hard and stiff.

Then I think they had another in 2005, and they said they basically changed the other way around. The 450r got a lot stiffer and the YFZ got plusher.

So, would 04 450r shocks be the best bet for the 400ex? I don't think anybody ever took that into consideration. 04 450r's had plusher shocks, so that would mean it would ride nicer on the 400ex then the newer shocks.

Possible, but I would guess finding a set from an 04 that haven't been rode hard and put up wet (or muddy) wouldn't be easy.

Yeah, and maybe not. You never know.

Maybe the people that say they get beat to death have 05-08 shocks, and the people that say they're fine if you turn them down have 04 shocks:confused:

omg, you got off really good.

Do the 04 shocks ride nice? They were supposed to be a lot softer that year.

The 450R shocks that beat me to death were off a 2006. Revalve and respring them prior to running them or you'll be disappointed.

My 450r shocks came off of an 06.

I keep them at full hard on both sides with no preload.

Works great for me. They soak up high speed bumps and handle jumps with no problem.

They get a little rough when your going slow, but thats a rare occasion:devil: :p

08400EX:

I LOVE those widow shocks. I always wanted them. One of the coolest shocks made in my opinion.

I wish I had money at all to mod mine up...:( :ermm:

Haha.

They ride good in the Georgia clay too. They ride good everywhere to me. Ive only rode these 450r shocks and the stockers on my quad, so to me, they were a HUGE improvement.

I play on getting a set of Tripple Rate Stadium series Works this summer, and making my own a-arms in a +2 +1 configuration and probably buying a LSR or RPM axle.

I have the shocks off of my 2004 for sale if you are interested. I think that 08400exs shocks are your best bet even though i have no idea why he is selling them but make me an offer on mine if you dont want to spend that much, they dont have much use on them.

I was happy with the 450R and Works Triple Rate combo, I just wanted to go to a different level since I am getting new arms too.

The Black Widows were the only ones I liked that had 4-way adjustability with its high and low speed compression adjustment plus rebound and triple rate springs. From talking to the other shock manufacturers I liked what I observed from dealing with Works.

Did they ride nice on the 450r? I mainly ride trails and wide open areas, and dont want to be beat up at the end of the day, lol.

Also, how much? Im not payin more than 75 after seeing what klutch paid

the thing to remember is think of the shocks are going to a -1 a-arm so the shocks will be more stiff. I think just backing off the preload should do the trick. Can you take the stock 400ex front springs off? If so use them and then teres a solution to most of the stiffness.

The Stock 400EX springs won't fit the 450Rs, they are tapered and narrower on one end, BTDT.

BUT, the 450R Works Triple Rate Springs do fit the 400EX shocks and that makes an interesting combo, BTDT2.

What are you thinking of getting? new shocks or the revalve/respring?

02-24-2008, 07:48 PM
Well I cant sell mine that cheap being that most are going for 150-200 and I would rather just hold on to them in case I sell the quad I would want to rip my peps off unless I get what everyone else is getting for stock take offs.

im am watching the ebay shocks it seems from what im hearing that anything from 04 and older is the better shock for me i think that is the route ill go unless someone on here has a set they can let go resonable i have a set of itp 9x9's they are offset the guy i got them off of said they should make it about an inch wider in the rear for a 400ex i bought with tires but havent tested them out yet been to cold around here and not alot of free time due to work but anyway im keeping the tires and if the rims check out good i may due a partial trade on them i pay boot of course for some shocks .
