Help!! How Do U Know If Your Tensioner Is Bad?

I HAVE A 400EX AND NEED SOME ADVICE ON HOW TO TELL IF MY CAM CHAIN TENSIONER IS BAD BECAUSE IVE TAKEN MINE OUT AND I CANT TELL IF ITS ANYGOOD OR NOT PLEASE HELP ME OUT

For one, if it's bad it should jump timing often. The tensioner won't hold the tension like it's supposed to.

it dosent jump time but there is a slight noise its not the valves cause i had it looked at and they said it was the tensioner or the chain so i wanted to know incase it was the tensioner so i could fix that myself and save some money
