Hey guys..Last night I installed the used carb that I bought off of here. I just put the carb on and this morning I was riding around and noticed that it was backfiring through the carb. Now I never looked to see what jets this carb had. Could this just be becuase the 2 carbs were set up differently?

that carb has a 155 main, and a 40 or 42 pilot if i remember right. Ran great w/ the setup i had

Id throw the jets from your old carb in if i were you if it was tuned right

k let me know. Do you know what jetting you had?

What are your mods? Im sure someone can help you w/ what jets you need for your setup exactly. I can jet a bike but i sure aint the quickest at getting the right jets the first time lol. Alot of ppl can tell you right off the top of their head from experience. I seem to have to do the old trial and error method alot  lol

You'll probably want to keep the jetting mostly stock...

148 main
Needle clip in the middle

Maybe a 40 pilot (38 is stock)
And maybe a slight turn increase on the mixture screw if there's no lid.

148 to 155..sounds like quite a gap for jetting..Ill see what my old stocker had in it and see what this ones got

It is a big difference...

With the stock filter and pipe I don't see any reason to increase the main jet.

I had an E-series slip on with K&N and 150 main, ran great.

thanks guys...Would the jetting make it pop through the carb?

he didnt increase the jetting, he bought a carb from me that had those jets for my mods.

Like joe said if your stock pipe and airbox id stay 148 maybe 150 since lid off. You should be ok w/ that pilot but it might be a little much.

Does it sound like a hiccup or a actual pop/backfire? Its probably getting way to much gas for your stock setup and cant burn it all

I have an E-Series, K&N, No Lid, and an Alum. Airbox. But I have a 158 in. Is that wayyyy too much?

Also, with the jet clip or w/e that is, is that the little clip on the main jet?! When I took it off to but in the poilet (42) I put it in, but didn't think it made a difference what way it was, but does it?!! If it does, what kind? How much?!

158 is probably right around where you need to be w/ those mods. i was 155 w/ slipon, uni stock box With lid

The clip is on the needle of the earlier 400ex's, 04 and before I think. It holds the needle in position.

Thank you! What about during the summer? Poeple told be to run a 155 during the summer because in the winter it runs leaner.

Thanks for the quick response!

With my HMF slip on, K&N, choke plate removed, no air box lid and the snorkel gone and capped (little more air volume in the air box) I am using 155 main and 42 pilot. Needle where it is stock and I havent touched the A/F screw and it seem to be running just fine. I'm about 65ft above sea level and its 80 degrees out 75% or so humidity.

im going to remove the choke sometime
