a cdi controles your engiene elctronicly. it controls your spark and how high your engine can rev up...and quite a few other things

The CDI is the brain of your ignition system, and it stands for Capacitor Discharge Ignition.

Your CDI recieves power from your stator, and it stores that energy in a Capacitor. It also recieves a timing signal from the stator, and it measures that timing signal to calculate engine RPM.

The CDI uses that timing signal and engine RPM to tell the spark plug when to fire. By this time, all that stored energy is several hundred volts. It's not quite high enough to arc across an air gap, so that several hundred volts gets passed through the ignition coil, where it gets boosted to several thousand volts. This several thousand volts then gets fed to the spark plug to create the spark.

The CDI controls all aspects of your spark, which includes shutting off the spark when engine RPM is too high (rev limiter), and also shutting off the spark when you hit the kill switch.

Generally, if you have a faulty CDI, you have no spark. But there are other components in your ignition system. The ignition coil, spark plug wire, pulse generator, a problem in any of these components could also result in no spark.
