Id go with the HRC cam. I think I know a place that is selling it for $170 I could be wrong though.Id rather have genuine honda parts (for the engine)not aftermarket but the 440 kit for the honda from hrc is like $980. Others just dont hold up as well. Also, you may need a heavier spring for that cam too.
so price may go up
a bit
either way, great way to gain a ton of power with tthe right carb!

I rode a very nice 400 yesterday. It had an HRC cam +piston with a Big Gun full exhaust. Yes it hauls the mail. The power comes on very strong from top to bottom. I actually had to be careful witht he throttle. The front end would come up very, very easy.

The HRC cam is $277 at ServiceHonda. The piston is $266. Very expensive BUT if you think about it the cam will actually save you mone because it is a drop in. You do not have to have your rockers hardened or any of that stuff.

Does anyone want to buy a used XR400 cam?????

Does HRC mean Honda Racing Cam? I have an XR 400 cam right now, how is this HCR cam different?

Are you sure that you don't have to harden your rockers with the HRC cam. I heard you have to . It would be great if someone could clear this up.:)

I have the HRC cam(not the copy) in my 416. I bought it from Service Honda for $277 and i feel it was worth every dime. It's a drop in cam that really woke my 400 up. I also did the 10-8-1 piston at the same time. The power comes on really hard and seems to pull forever. It's more like 2 stroke power than 4 stroke. With the mods i have i can run with the stock Raptors where as before i did the motor work( just having a slip on and jet kit) they would get me by about 4-6 quad links now i'm neck and neck with them. I'm using the stock carb now and can't make up my mind if i should get the FCR or a new pair of shocks. The quad runs so well now it's hard for me to beleive that the carb could really help that much. I don't know how a 400 with a XR cam runs haven't rode one or seen one from what i read here you can't go wrong with either one both seems to really wake up the 400's motor. Choose the one that fits into your budget.

The HRC cam is Honda's more aggresive cam for the XR..

If someone is selling them for $170, let me know where :D

Hard facing the rockers comes into play with 'reworked' camshafts..

This is my understanding of the whole issue (as it was explained to me, it's very hard to find anyone to actually verify it 100%)

There are two ways to rework a camshaft:

1) weld up the lobes and re-grind the profile - this results in very hard lobes, making hard-faced rockers mandatory

2) just re-grind the cam, reducing the base circle (resulting in more lift) - this doesn't harden the cam, so hard face rockers are not mandatory.

The beauty of the XR / HRC cams is they are brand spanking new Honda parts which do not require hard faced rockers.

That just about sums it up.

If you want an aggressive cam the HRC is the way to go. It is the cheapest because it is a direct drop in. You don't spend x amount of dollars having your rockers hardened.

ccole400ex.....Did you say you have the HRC piston too? I have felt one and it is much lighter than stock. All of the excessive weight has been milled out.

The HRC piston is $266 bucks from service honda, that is a bit too much for me. I think I will be going with the JE stock bore High Compression Piston.

Any one know the part number to the HCR cam?

The HRC piston is a hand made piston specifically designed for the XR400 dirt bike. It offers increased perfromance and maximum reliability. (So they say anyway.) I have seen this piston and held it in my hands. It is exremely lightweight. All of the excessive material has been taken out. I held the stock piston in one hand and the HRC in the other. Wow, what a difference in weight. The idea behind the weight loss is a quicker revving engine and also less stress/weight on the rod=reliability+performace gain. :D :D :D I like that idea. The piston also uses all OEM parts (rings, pin, circlips, gaskets).

Thumper Racing uses the HRC CAM FOR THIS 440.

I would rather spend less money on a JE piston that gives the same performance gain.

I also think that the HRC or even the normal XR cam is the way to go, even for more coin. Direct drop in, factory honda part, brand new. Nuff said. I think I'd personally rather get an IMS 440 big bore kit with a JE 11:1 piston instead though...oh man imagine that power.
