Well in a few weeks im going to buy a new atv.It is between a trx450r and trx400ex. I ride trails, sand pits ,and every now and again mx. I dont really need a ton of power but i dont want to the buy the 400 and want more power. IM 14, 5'6'', 110 lbs

what do you guys think

PS. these will both be 08's

400ex.

They look trick, have decent all-around usable power, more trailability, and one of the most reliable bikes around.

Even if you do get bored, an exhaust will fix that

:D

I was having a hard time for this choice as well we do the same styles of riding except i do open field instead of sand pits but either way i decided id go with a 450r. Won't have to worry about it being too little power. I mean chances are if i buy a 400ex i will get bore with the power fast thats what happened on my 300 so i am going with a 450.

The 450 seems to be the best choice.

It's obvious your a Honda guy, but if you go the 450 route, go with the YFZ or LTR.

The YFZ's have a little more power and better handling IMHO. The Honda is mild, and handling-wise most people prefer the 400ex stock for stock.

I've always been a HUGE yamaha fan, and trust me, it won't let ya down.;)
The LTR's are also nice. I don't like the traction control though. It's just one more thing to go wrong.

How good of a rider are you:p

Also, i'm looking for more power myself already. When I get the title on mine i'm gonna sell and get a Rappy 700. Screw the 450's.

wait woah I just saw your on a 250ex now... I would NOT put yourself on a 450r after being on a 250ex now. Step up to the 400ex and learn to handle a bigger machine before you go for the bull. Going from the 250ex to the 400ex would be plenty of power even stock for a while. Like said before if you want some more power and something different get a slip on silencer.

I don't know i am a Honda man i am 15 6"1 and at like 140 lbs... i don't get thrown around 2 much just got to know what you are doing...

and Hondamaster... most people say things but if you have never ridden one you truly don't know.

What i suggest to you (Exrider) try riding a 400ex, or a 450r and see which you like more. After getting used to the 450r you wont want to switch. This is all my personal opinion though. Another good 450 is the YFZ those handle very nicely too. Just putting it out there though i'd also truly rather a Honda 450R over any other 450 on the market.

I have ridden the YFZ and 450r.

I truly think the YFZ is a slightly better bike. The beauty of having a large riding group is being able to ride different bikes:p
I like the way the YFZ feels. I cant say anything about LTR, KFX, MXR, etc. because I have never ridden them.

But I have ridden a YFZ and TRX;)

If I were you, id go with a 400ex. I dont know about your riding skill, but anything is more powerful than a 250ex. At your weight, the 400ex will pull you around quite nicely. And when you get bored with it, the aftermarket for it is huge and cheap.;)

But if you go the 450 route, take a look at the KFX and LT-R.

And if your not biased, look into the Polaris Outlaw 450MXR;)

get a 450r if you want to rip on the quad at all times. get a 400ex if you want to do alittle of both, because a 450r isnt really a good quad to mosey on down the trails with, it likes to be revved and be moving. the 400ex is bulletproof and reliable and has plenty of power to satsify you. the 450r is a mx machine and if you want to do mx i suggest get the 450, but the 400 would work in mx aswell if you put alittle money into it.

my vote goes to the 400ex

Get an R. I went from a 250X to a 450R. I also have a 400ex for cruising around or when my 450r is down. The difference is huge. Getting a 450R you wont need to get anything ever again. Theres plenty of power for you to grow into over the next 5 or 6 years.

Also look at more than just a honda. Theres alot of other options that are out there that are just as good and better.

i have an idea. this is what i would do. since your buying new, and new quads are around 7 grand or so. buy a used (older model) 400ex and 450r. thne you have 2 quads for around the same price. :blah:  :D . but back to reallity, i think going from a 250ex to a 400ex you would feel amazing power gains. i went to a 400ex from a 300ex and my eyes were as big as oranges:eek2: . also since you ride trails, the 400ex would be i little bit better for you. i weigh around 150 with gear and my 400 pulls me around just fine.

I weight about the same with all my gear, and my 440 keeps a smile on my face.

I think you missed the question.. 450R or 400ex.

I don't see Yamaha mentioned?

Ok.. I went from a Fourtrax 250 to a 400ex and got used to the power with no problem, but it didn't take long for me to want more. I'd say go with the 450 and just take it easy for a while! No one said you need to be WFO everywhere.

Im not stupid, I know it said 450r. I'm just not a big fan of 450r's and I was suggesting a YFZ450 being I always loved yamaha's more, and I thought the YFZ felt alot nicer.

Any 450 is alot more maintance than the 400ex.

Plus, they cost a fortune to rebuild, unlike the 400ex

Deffine agressive? When i had a 250ex I would keep up with buddies on 400ex or 450r because I knew how to handle it and caught everyone in tight spots or turns but on straights I would get murdered.

get the kfx450. it is way better then the 450r. Im not bashing but i think the 450r is a waste of money.

I absolutely LOVE it when people make random comments with nothing to back it up?

There are so many people who just say "xxxx quad is junk and yyyy quad is way better!"

I think the KFX450 is a waste of money because my buddy bought one a few weeks after it came out and sold it after less than 6 months. His fuel pump went on it 3 times and so did a few sensors in the engine.
