initial suspension set up

Ok 400ex stock travel +2 arms, stock trx450 shocks, triple rate elka set up for 180lb rider. I know how to set up a dirt bike fairly well, but do quads respond to the same concepts?? on a bike with 12 inches of travel with the rider on you want about 4 inches of sag, so if my 400ex has 8 inches of travel do I want 3 inches of sag when setting on the quad, as an initial starting point? I am not concerned at this time with comp and rebound settings, just the being balance of the machine. thanks Mild Bill
