can you run a Houser chassis'ed CRF450/YZ426 quad in Four Stoke Modified, or does it have to have a production quad motor?

i was thinking of building a Houser framed CRF450/YZ426 quad with the +1 long travel front end(fully adjustable Elka shocks), and 18 inch (swing arm) long travel rear (alos Elka) over the winter. something similar to Jeff@Quadshop's project CRF450. i would like to run in the GNCC 4 Stroke Modified class, and maybe move into the pro class with the same quad (this is my ultimate goal :D )

as far as opinion's go (everbody has got one), what would be the best motor to use, the CRF450 or YZF426? and why? also would it be cheaper or easier in the long run to buy a MX CRF450/YZF426 quad and do the nessisary changes to run XC?

i thought about the pro production class or a 250r, but i like the ground up scratch built quads with the big 4 strokes. please dont flame me out. its alot on the table, but i have nothing but time.

new YZ450 is not an option. the CRF450/YZF426 motors are more available, along wih proven. i just wonder wich is better suited to race XC?

Well I don't know if its legal. I don't think it is but I would go with the CRF450. The yz426 has more of a pull back to it then the crf, The crf is faster, has more torque and with the yz426 the kickstart is really hard as the crf450 is light but the crf does not have an engine brake. The crf450 is a better deal!

superraptor, You would not be able to run Pro-prod, You are restricted to stock chassis/ stock engine cases.

You would be able to run four stroke mod. I have never seen a CRF450 at a GNCC Race.

Ryan88, Why would he go with a CRF450 over the new YZ450 or WR450 elec start.

We have a 426 with a wr450 coming this spring. They are awsome and do keep up with the crf's. The new yzf450's are only 4 speeds as the wr's are 5 speeds electric AND kick start !! We race MX so I dont know the rules but I know you can go on their web site and find out.

I thought about building a WR450 on a Houser. The WR would be a better fit, cause of the wide ratio tranny and 5 speed, also elect start.

Opted for 2 Z400's for the price of one bike. prac & race.

wr 426 would be the ticket. electric start, way better gearing.

The electric starter is the best option. The start is a dead engine start and if you kill the engine somtime during the race, how esay is it going to get started again? Will it start on the first kick or ? The more you set the more time that you have to make up. Baker tried a YZ one year and gave it up because of the starting problems. Something to think about. Yes they are fast when running. This is only why they are used mostly in the MX races not in XC.

I have seen a few guys in the Open A class with KTM 400s in LS chassis, as well as some of those Husaburgs! I dont think there is as many special project quads at the GNCCs as much as the GNCs

Rico:
i PM'ed Jeff@quadshop last night asking him about about His CRF450 quad and he said he would sell me his for less than i could build one for, and i am waiting on a price from him now. i had been thinking about going on and doing the winter project thing as to not spend my savings all at once, but just buying one already done woud be great.

i have yet to find a post where someone could tell me how this type of quad would do in the GNCC races. i know they tear up the MX races on a regular basis, but the XC races are a whole differnt ball game. i want to see if they would be competitve before i spend some major $$$.

Well I've seen the CRF450 that the quadshop built several times in person. Like I said it has not got any dirt on it,,only dust and it's setup strictly for XC racing. Long travel quadrate shocks and Long travel A-arms,,quick fill gas tank,,everything on it is custom trick stuff,,no half arsin this quad at all...I think Jeff is a crackhead for choosing the dale over the CRF, not saying the dales are slow or anything,,but that CRf XC quad is one of a kind and I'm sure it has more power than you'll ever need,,,too much if anything..
