I have an 87 trx250r, I need a new wiring harness but they only sell 88 and 89 now at the dealers. Can I use an 88 wiring harness with my 87 cdi? The cdi part numbers are different for the 87 and 88 so I don tknow if I will need a new cdi. ALso if it will work will I need to change anything?
thanks

Use the 88 harness. I have a 88 harness on my 86 250R, works just fine, everything plugged right in. If you use the 89, you will have to change one of the stator connectors.

It's the same basic harness, and same basic colors, and any of them will only need slight modifications to fit any other year.

I can't remember which year they started the key switch. I know the 86 didn't have a key, but can't remember if it's 87 or 88 they added it.

The plug types for the stator connections change a little, but I think it's the same wire colors. If necessary, you could just clip those connections and replace them with any style of your choosing. I would suggest something water-repellant.

If memory serves, I believe all the CDI connections are exactly the same, but I would double-check with a second source.
