Do you know what is in the motor now? Is it a stock piston?

Are you sure they didn't mean you needed a new "compression release." If the thing is as hard to kick as you say it is, then I'd say you have plenty of compression. I'd have the compression checked before you start buying a lot of new parts and tearing the motor apart.

you have to first take a compression test but chances are if you never rebuilt it since new its time for a new piston and rings disasseble top end of motor and send the cylinder to be bored out and instal a new piston and rings, it is proubly not a bad time to have a valve job done as well. buy a service manual and a torque wrench before reassembly take your time, and your bike will run like new.
