i am looking at getting a new set of tires or atleast rears for my 400ex before the spring. We mostly ride trails and gravel in the badlands and possibly the woods in Michigan. Which would be the best choice and in what size? thanks

get a light weight tire for a 400ex. HD's will kill your power. doughnuts and spinning will be nonexistent with new HD's. I recommend XCR's for a good tire that hooks up well.

That is not true.....I had 20" HD's on my old 400 and yes they grabbed well, but I could slide them pretty easily. I definately would not go with 22" on a 400.

I was hesitant to get a 6 ply tires for my 400ex but I ended up getting 23" Razr2's for the front and 21" Knarly's for the rear and I absolutely love them!

I was running 14/39 gearing for the stock tires and now I'm running 13/39 for these. I still have great top end and I have plenty of power to whip these tires around just like the lighter, smaller stock tires. I run mostly woods/scramble type stuff and the added ground clearance is nice.

I have HD's as well, they grab like no other and can corner too but on a downside they are damn heavy, the rears with wheels on altogether must atleast weigh 35 to 40lbs. I took mine off cuz im gettin ready to sell them for that purpose so I put my stockers back on and I could curl with one hand the back end of my quad.

No not really, it was just a point I was making that it was lighter without the HD's on. LOL I did try it for the fun of it just to see got it about 3inches and that was it, arms are to short to curl when standing up.

I went from the stockers to 21" 6 ply on ITP Baja's and there MIGHT be a 12-15lb difference.
