you might want to lower your quad. From the pictures I have seen most dont run Hoosiers or American racers so you can get off cheap with some turf tamers...
hopefully someone from down there will reply with some more specific info about that class....

The age classes are open displacement. They still pay points but most riders use them to tweek their setups or as "extra lap" classes to find good lines.

The Pro class also open displacement.

Most quads are very close to stock with the following three most quick, inexpensive and popular mods - Tires, sway-bar, and sprockets.

Tires - 18" med-soft compound with close tread like turf tamers, Maxxis MX or holeshot MX.
The track is hard pack and dries out fast with dust, especially in the early evening and will break up under the high torque in the hairpin corners in the later rounds. It is low on clay so doesn't get blue-grooved but the big sweepers stay very hard, slick and smooth on the inside with some marbling on the outside.

Sway-bar - Control the inside and keep the *** under you.
The race course has no banking in any of the corners. The ST Oval course uses the 1/3 mile oval which combines a D and egg shape (sharper in south corners 2-3 than north corners 3-4; very long front straight; expanding sweep on the back from corner 2-3). It's 1/3 mile on the inside of the oval and with 40' lanes so almost 1/2 mile on the outside.
The TT course breaks hairpin into the infield between oval corner 2-3 then goes into the north sweeper of a 1/10 mile outlaw kart track in the infield before reentering the oval on an off camber hairpin on the back.

Sprockets - The course is big, long and wide so very fast and with many good lanes.
Make changes one at a time - smaller tires increase torque but decrease top speed; 1 larger tooth front sprocket increases top speed dramatically without much loss in torque; up to 2 smaller in the back moderately increases top speed but greatly decreases tire spin.
Very quickly you may find your self running out your gearing from the big sweeper of the oval's corner 3-4 down through the front straight especially if you've lowered your top speed with smaller than stock rear tires. But you must dig yourself out of the hairpins in the entrance to the infield and the return to the oval of the TT course.

Jetting - Track elevation is 5200'; Racing Season Mean temperature 80°F, Pressure 29 IN

There's always at least an hour of practice at every event so plenty of time to ask questions and test the course.

To compete with the 450's my 7 year old 400ex ran the following mods in 450cc Novice and Open Novice finishes:
Torque - 13:1 426 JE piston (w/110 race gas for cooling), 38MM TRX440 DOUG Eichner Signature Series Edelbrock ATV carb, Stage 2 Hot Cam, lid off w/ K&N Air Filter; Yoshimuri head pipe and exhaust.
Top Speed - 87mph w/16 tooth front sprocket; 20" Holeshot HD tires rear; stock rev limiter.

Good info. Thanks for that. So your saying we get more than one practice session?... Do you guys water the track throughout the night or just once before practice?
We are planning to come down in April. look forward to racing with you guys.

The practice lineup is kid quads, kid bikes, adult quads, adult bikes about 5 laps each. We run through that lineup as many times as we can in an hour, usually at least three times. Then there's a late comers practice if needed right after the riders meeting.

There are actually two venues built in the Thunder Bowl oval - the big TT, ST courses for adults I've described before and a kids TT, ST course. The kids coursees are shaped exactly like the big versions but use the 1/10 mile kart oval and it's infield as their basis. For beginners and real young riders it keeps the speeds down but is still very competitive for skilled kids and the 80-125cc quads. You haven't been bored until you've sat through kids on 50's puttering around the big TT course. Even the adult pit bike riders would rather run the kids course than get swallowed in upwards of two minute lap times on the big track.

The track owners are still fine tuning the watering schedule but it's basically - Water the hell out of it the night before a Sunday race or all afternoon for a Saturday night race then wheel pack before practice. Then two-three rounds of water after practice for the heat races, two-three rounds after the heats for the mains, and one if needed halfway through the mains.

It's always hard packed but can be dusty on Saturday nights until the sun goes down and the wind dies then it holds water pretty well. Sunday events don't have as big a dust problem because they're run at the begining and end of the season early in the day because it's can get cold real fast after dark in March and October. The best track condition days are always the first race of the season and the last because the temps are very cool with low wind in the morning - then you'd swear there's more clay in the track. But there's always a chance of getting snowed out in or froze over because of the high-desert elevation - there's only been one snow day and one hard freeze in the five seasons we've run and those events were either late March or late Oct and we ran anyway.

See you there!

Adult pit bike class?.. Nice! a few of us have pitster's we race at the local indoor also, would love to bring them along,
The kids course sounds perfect for these bikes. I agree the full TT course would be to much for the little bikes.
We didnt see it on your class list but if you run them we will bring em!

There hasn't been a enough adults for a seperate pit bike class so they run with whatever displacement they fit. All we need is three entries of equal displacement to make the adults their own points class.

I've built my daughters 50cc DRR out enough I run it alongside my son on his 40cc Eton with the kids for fun to fill up their classes to the next trophy level when she's at softball.

Is this just Thunderbowl?

I only raced a couple races the first season, so I've been out of the loop for a little while. But didn't they run a complete series including Hawthorne and Fallon racetracks as well?

Thunder Bowl Speedway is the only track to have a 2008 schedule set so far. They will award their own championships at each of their two series - Spring and Summer.

March 30, 2008 is opening day for the Flat Track Motorcycle and Quad ATV racing at Thunder Bowl Speedway - it will be an all day practice session.

Gates will open first thing Sunday morning if you want to set up early but practice will not start until 10am.

The price is $10 for everyone coming in the gate so we don't have to hassle over who's a rider and who's not so anyone with a wristband can ride the track or not as they please.

We'll go down the following lineup 10 riders at a time and repeat as needed until 3pm. The layout will be the regular TT course. Water will probably be run about every hour or so as the dirt holds up. We always run big quads first when going from one track to another so they can push the water/mud in so it's safer for the bikes to run.

A riders meeting will be held during the lunchtime intermission/watering to go over the plan for the upcoming season, answer questions, organize volunteers, sign-up sponsors and take preregistrations for series' entries.

Practice lineup:
On the Small Track
-Big kids Quads
-Little kids Quads
-Big kids Bikes
-Little kids Bikes

On the Big Track
-Adult Quads
-Kid Quads
-Adult Bikes
-Kid Bikes
-Any special fun rides (karts, side-by-sides UTVs, speedway bikes, side-car bikes, vintage etc.)
