I just installed a rad carrier in a 400ex. I can move the carrier a bit in the swing arm. I have not adjusted the chain yet so those bolts are still loose. Will this movement be a problem.

probly not if the bolt are still loose. adjust your chain tighten the bolts down and find out then if it still moves.

side to side
I don't think there should be any side to side movement even if the four bolts on the rear of the swingarm are loose.

NO, you shouldn't sounds like a lose axle nut.:ermm:

Do you have the rear caliper stay and snap ring installed? That's what stops the carrier side to side movement.
The axle/threaded collar/axle nut simply keeps the axle tight to the carrier but it doesn't keep the carrier tight to the swingarm.
