i dont think you need it. my 2000 never had one. in fact all the 2000 and 2001's i have seen dont but all the 2002 and newer that i have seen have it

My 05 didn't have it (but I wasn't the original owner), my 08 doesn't have it either.

i have it still and so does everyone else i know who has a 400
its probably there to keep the mud and dirt off the battery?

yea i diddn't figure it did anything important. the battery is so out in the open anyway, if theres water, thats not gonna stop it.

The rubber thing always got in the way whenever I needed to boost the battery so I took it off.

I mean don't think I'm trying to prove you all wrong, but it does help some. It keeps mud and whatnot from getting on your terminals, which with alot of mud on in time will corrode. I just switched to an aluminum airbox, so you can't even see my battery :D
