I'm lookin for some good, lightweight trail tires (rear only) for my 400. The trails that we ride usually consist of mud, sand, and loose dirt. Right now I have Kenda Klaws all around but the rears just don't cut it in the mud/sand. Many trails that we ride are pretty rutted from the larger 4x4's riding them which is another problem for my Klaws because theyre not very tall. I saw a Z400 runnin Mudlites in the rear, they were only about 2" taller than my rears and the guy said they handle the trails awesome. I'm just worried they might be a lot heavier than my tires. Any input is appreciated...thanks

you might consider dropping to a 14 tooth sprocket though..

^ X2 what he said.

I have a 22" rear set of those mounted on spare rims for my wife's 250EX for whenever it gets really nasty. They also give her more ground clearance, she runs stock 400EX tires (20" rears). I have tried them out a little but so far we haven't needed them, and we have ridden in some nasty stuff in the last month.

I have found that the tires with the treads close together (Razrs, kendas, Holeshots etc) really gum up in the mud in my area and become slicks. I had better luck with my stocks tires than with any of those. The only exception in these type of tires is the Maxxis iRazr which has an "open" tread and cleans out better.

If you decide on the Sur Track you can get them for $50 or less each at Tread Depot. They are heavy at 24lbs mounted on stock wheels vs 17.6 lbs for the stock tire/wheels..but they don't seem to bog down her 250 so on a 400 you should be fine. However as suggested dropping down a tooth on the front sprocket (unless you already have) is always recommended for trail riding.

the sur tracs have been discontinued, but i agree, they tear up the mud like you would not believe...

it also happens that i have a set for sale on some douglas .190 wheels with for the honda rear bolt pattern...they have very little use on them...i'll sell for 90 shipped...

I've been thinking about running I razrs when my regular razrs wear out. They look like they would shed mud very nicely.

I'm looking at ITP Trac Stars (http://www.itptires.com/sportatv/tracstar.html) for my next set of tires. They're supposed to be a great lightweight radial 6 ply tire that handles similar to stockers and be a little better in the mud.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Speedy...I won't be buying anything til after I get my tax return, not really sure when that's gonna be. Seems like a good deal though. Wish I had the money.

They look like a killer tire but in some pictures I've seen of them they looked too rounded. If you get them let us know what you think.

Will do. It'll probably be a couple months, but I'll post up when I get them. I'm also planning on going to a taller than stock tire front & rear. I have beat my swingarm skid up pretty good while riding in rocky areas and fallen logs, and I'm tired of getting high centered!

Those trac stars look pretty good, and so do the rear I-razrs. Does anyone know how the irazrs do when there's not a lot of mud? like in drier conditions and rocky stuff?

Regular Razrs seem to be the best all around. They get good traction is sand and mud and they slide very predictable making them great.

I have trac stars all the way around on my 400 and I love them. I only trail ride and they're great for what I do. They are fairly lightweight, clean out well and even do pretty well (better than regular razors IMO). in the creek.

What size Trac Stars do you have? Any pics of them mounted?

The "open" tread of the iRazr not only cleans out good, but the spaced knobs grab edges of rocks and root/logs better than a "closed" tread design. On a slick rock or log a closely spaced tread will spin where an open spaced tread will grip the edges better.

Think of a dirt bike with enduro/Dual Sport tires with closely spaced tread vs a widely spaced Knobby. No brainer.

Of course a closer tread will typically work better on harder packed surface like a track etc. hence their popularity as an MX tire.
