Ok i got a mx ready 440ex. All the tracks are closed for good by my house and area. I really like trail riding, hill climbing and just having a great time. The two quads i would like to trade or buy is a Predater 500 or a raptor 660. What do you guys think? Should i get ride of the mx quad and get like a stock or close raptor or predater? If you think i should then Tell me what quad you guys would go with,.. i want a quad will alot of power and a good quad to have sheer fun on.

Or just take the spacers off the back and put on some woods tires and save time and money gettin a new quad?

What you mean..? My 440ex isnt good for trail riding and slow pase riding so even with no spaces and woods tires it will get over heated and stuff. I just want to know which quad you guys suggest me getting??

We have quite a few kids around here with 440s and they do just fine riding through the woods. slow or fast. Do you have an aftermarket oil tank and over sized oil cooler?

I really dont want to put more money in this thing. I just want to know opinion wise whether to get a raptor or Predator.

Just so you know, I have seen a few guys riding woods by me with predators, and the front plastic funnels water onto them pretty good.

I'd go with the raptor probably, however I would probably through some airscoops and a larger oil tank on my 400 first.

You'll be a lot faster in the trails than you would think if you just changed up that 400ex. All you need to do is ditch the spacers on the back, throw on some XC tires and maybe drop the compression down a bit if you're worried about the heat.

I had never overheated my 416ex in the trails, and my neighbor has never overheated his 440.. Cooling isn't that much of a problem.

what i would do is part out all the MX stuff on your 440 and replace it with XC/trail stuff. i think you will be very satisfied with how it will perform an the trails. but back to your original post, if you want to trade it, i would definately get the rappy over the pred. JMO.

Part out the 400ex, and get a rappy 700

screw the 660's. They're tippy, top-heavy, and front-light. They also arent known to be too reliable.

If you part out, the rappy 700 is supposed to be a much nicer machine.:D

Part out MX stuff and put on some XC parts on it... i dont like Raptors much but i truly dislike Polaris id say the Raptor...

The 400EX is one along with its older brother the 450R are King of the Forest! I have spent endless 100+ degree days when it's so humid you sweat if you just sit outside, roosting away on my 440. My 440 is 11:1 compression with no scoops, no cbr oil cooler, no fan and no larger oil tank. Trust me it will be fine & dandy.

Im guessing from his replys what he's really saying here is that hes tired of the 440ex and wants a different quad.

Id say do some research on the quads you are looking at and get the one best suited for your type of riding.

i wouldn't get a predator. They are outdated now that the new single axle polaris quads are out. They the underpowered and the front plastic gets in the way of your legs. And the raptor 660... there is a reason they got the nickname craptor! The new raptor 700 is probably the best trail quad you can get though!

Thanks SGA. I will research and see what best fits me.. With my Quad i cant get a 700 Because of there price. I was also looking at a z400? How are they.. I just want something with a radiator and reverse for long hard core trail riding.
O and i am tired of the 440.. i mean the power is amazing but the width.. no reverse and a fast pase motor.. its hard to ride trails.

NO!!!!! z400s are bad!! unless u want to be fixin ur frame every time you go out, if you want reverse get a new 400ex wit reverse and put some trail mods on it, thts wat i would do anyways

Grab an 02 or younger Raptor 660R, a newer 400ex w/ reverse, or if you can find the cash go with the 700R.

01-28-2008, 09:30 PM
yeah 400ex was built to be a trail machine. some decent suspension upgrades and a few other rather simple mods can make it so much fun for playing around to aggressive trail riding. The widest I will go on my 400ex is +1 a-arms on the front or +2 with a 4:1 offset wheel.

400ex with a good suspention. will make a great trail quad. ive owned a z400. kfx 700. i like the 400ex in the deep muddy, hilly woods. where my 250r does okay with that. as long as your keeping a good pace .not idleing through the woods that ex shouldnt over heat.:chinese:

Why a 02 of younger Raptor? I know the 400ex is a good trail but i don't want another 400ex because ive gotten really tired you then in some ways. Plus guys, by quad will not sale in the 4k price range to even get a newish quad or a 700..

Hmmm 01/02 raptor 660 would be fine as long as it had the transmission updated and fixed.(bad gears that shear) If not i wouldnt get one of those.

The cheapest way to get reverse would be to find a good 05 and newer bottom end off ebay and put your top end on it. Or even find a whole engine. I highly reccomend GDH racing off of ebay. That guy sells the absolute best used honda parts hands down. Great prices and you get exactly what he tells you your getting. no lieing or bs. I have bought lots of parts off of him including whole engines that run awesome!!!

If you dont have alot of money to spend how do you expect to sell your 400ex and get something else? Either way your not gonna break even enough to get something else. Selling your quad for a certain price and finding something for that same price thats decent isnt always a sure thing.

I got my 01 400ex for 2500 and it was all bone stock and mint condition hardly ridden. So if your 400ex is in decnet shape id say 1500 to 2500 maybe 3000 if your lucky. A decent z400 will be 3000 plus easy. And most raptor 660's sell for 3000 to 4500 around here.

I cant even think of anything to replace your 400ex. A z400 is okay and the raptor 660 can be alot of fun. But a 700r raptor is far superior in handling and power stock for stock. The predator would be a bad choice and i wouldnt consider it at all.

I dunno what other choices you would have except a z400/kfx400 or a raptor 660. You really are better off getting a newer 400ex or just a newer 400ex engine to throw in your 400ex. Would be the cheapest way id say if your not gonna have much to spend.

02 raptors didn't have tranny problems, only the 01s. I had an 02 raptor and the engine was good for trails with lots of torque, but stability is a joke. Too top heavy. My opinion on raptors are that they make you a good rider for when you move to a competitive quad.:D

if you go from that honda to a raptor you will be sorry.
i did the same thing about 4 years ago , and i knew after about 20 of riding that raptor i made a BIG mistake........wont turn, and handling is well.... a joke....... i know i will be getting bashed now for saying this, but that is my story.... i got rid of that raptor just as soon as i could.....

you have 1 of the best woods quads made..
and as for the z400 they are a great woods quad also.

A z400 feels exactly like the older raptor with a weaker engine

yeah, but the new 700's are completely different!

They have amazing power, great handling, great stability. They ARE probably king of the trails.

Ill second that the 660's suck.

raptors do feel top heavy an seem to tall in a sense. I wouls tick to the 400ex because its so versatile and handles great

If i kept my 440, what would i need to do to drop it to a 416 or even a 426? Heres a crap picture of it after a day at the track.

Punch a new sleeve in and change jetting.

I would try to part out and get a rappy 700, imo.

The 700's are amazing! They have so much torque and power. If you do hillclimbing and trails these days, NOTHING will be better then the raptor.

Plus if any other parks open up or you find a open area, the power is amazing and it handles alright for the track.

In the future, when im allowed to get a job, im selling my 400ex and gettin a rappy 700. But for now im just as happy with my 400ex.

Theres one thing better than a raptor 700. A raptor 700 with maxxis razr2's on it. They go through anything with those tires on. ;)
