400EX!!!! thing will never let you down.. and if you do a lot of trail riding deff go with the 400 but if you do alot of dragging or riding at dunes then i would go with a 450 but for trails there is nothing better than the 400 and if you put some money into it it can run up there close to a 450

There have been multiple threads on this:rolleyes:

For trails, the 400ex is the best by far. The 450r likes to be rev'ed, as like all 450's. The 400ex has great all around power, but isnt no rocketship.

For open cornfields, the 450r hands down. You could really get moving in the fields, which is why the 450r's power is more fun.

Dirt road riding, 450r again. Just the power is so much more fun.

The 400ex is better if you do alot of everything. Its an all-around bike.
The 450r is better for track and open. Yes, they are alot better in trails then a banshee, but not as good as a 400ex.

You asked this question in the 400EX forum. I think it's pretty safe to say the advice you'll receive will be a little one sided.

i have both sitting in my garage right now...i ride mostly trails and manage to hit a few fields and open roads like you...if i had to do it over again, i would have bought my wife a nice new 400ex instead of getting a 450r for myself.

one thing you have to ask is...what is the general speed you will be riding at? what other factors control that? for instance do you happen to ride with some utes and putt around more than go full throttle through the woods? if that is the case, get the 400ex.

the 450r is more like a two stroke that needs to be kept at high revs. the 400ex is an easier bike to lug around at lower rpms. mods can be made to the 450r to get it more trail friendly...i had to put on an after market exhaust and my next move may be a one tooth lower front sprocket.

to me, the 400ex handles better( i'll amend that, i had a gt thunder link and revalve on my rear and elka recs shocks on the front of the 400ex). the 450 sits high to me...i like my ride height to around 8" where as the 450r was around 11 stock...once i had the shocks revalved and got the ride height where i wanted it, the 450 was def. the better handler...but that was another $750 and i need some after market handlebars to be comfortable on the 450. i was running 450r bars on the 400ex and they felt great on it...

so all in all i spent about a grand on the 450r to get it to where i was as comfortable and as fast as i was on the 400ex with only about $650 in mods

Seeing that you've had a history with 2-strokes I say you might like the 450r the best. They can be geared down to be great woods machine but if you don't gear them down a lot they will need the little extra work and technique that you used with that 250r. I will say though that a 400ex is as solid as a rock and I haven't found a reason to sell and upgrade yet. My group runs mostly woods and I have ZERO problems hanging with the newer 450s.

As stated before, it sounds like a 400ex is a better choice for your application. 450 power can be had out of the 400 if you decide to upgrade in the future, without losing the quads low speed finesse.

IMO--The 400ex has a better feel to it and handles better stock-stock than a 450R.
