depends on the money you want to spend......but i would say 05 and do a whole new rear end. swingarm, linkage, shock and youd be good to race if thats what ya wanna do. If just riding trails and goofing off leave it as it is.

If you don't mind the kicker, I would say get the 05. You can't go wrong for $3000 for a brand new 450R.

The 06 and up engines are diff. and so is the gearing. Its not that hard of a fix for 04/05 R's to make them more trail friendly. All you have to do is drop the front sprocket one tooth and itll be just fine.

i paid 5100 out the door, for my 05, brand new off the showroom floor... back in june 06... i like the 05's better, and not because i have one, just the 06+ have starting issues... and a few recalls, not real major, i just prefer the 05

i was in the same boat and i bought an 06. i have had zero problems so far and the 06 - 08 hasn't changed at all so there must be something good about them

oh boy havent been on the ol' R forums for a while, now you could do what im thinkin about doing to my 04, get the 05, put a 13t front sprocket on it (a steel one will do fine NOT aluminum...trust me), stock white plastic, and the newer headlight assembly (or aftermarket hood as i have), and tell people its your 07 kicker :D (while the real 07 kicker just comes in red i dont think anyone will know the difference), and lastly, enjoy.

hope this helped in a way

There is no difference between 04 and 05? no problems with the 04 model? i am in the market for a R or a yfz...

some 04's had crank problems, its one of the sticky's in this section. id beware of an 04 unless its had some hours on it or has had the issue fixed. personally, i like my 05 better than 06 and up

Something must be good about the 04-05's That's what Natalie ran until this year and Byrd may still be on one in 08. If It was up to me I would buy an 05 and have some cash left over for suspension and other goodies.

BTW I have an 05 and wouldn't have an electric start. If the valves are set right one kick hot or cold is all she needs.
