I am getting my atc 70 running again but the rusted gas tank is holding me up. How do you get the rust out? There is alot of loose rust that I can hear in it too but I can't get it out because there is a 1" lip on the inside around the opening. I have a tank prep kit but I want to get most of the rust out. When I was little my dad put rocks in it and shook the tank and got it out, but it's a pain in the @$$ to get the rocks out. Any suggestions or tips?

try an extendable magnet. or a shop vac with a smaller hose taped to the end.

"Small" rocks, a little unleaded, lots of shaking and a Shop-Vac. I have an SL70 that had a rust problem it caused all sorts of problems with engine idle speed. I did the rock thing and it helped, but if you can't get 90~95 percent of the crap out before you coat it you're better off looking for a used/new metal tank or even better an AM plastic tank.

what i do is use a bunch of ball bearings instead of rocks, I then fill the tank with water and shake the **** out of it, then rinse it out, blow it out with an air gun, and leave it to dry.
