do you need a higher comp piston with a drop in cam (hrc, hotcams, xr400) for a 400ex? Also are hotcams stage 1 cams any good? Do you have to buy the $150 installation kit to install them? thanks

Hotcams stage 1 or XR400 cam will work fine in a stock engine. Of course you'll get better gains if you bump up the compression, but if installed alone they will shift the power higher up in the revs.

All you need to install a cam is the camshaft itself. The rocker cover gasket is reusable. Loctite the cam sprocket bolts.

i would suggest going to a higher comp piston, it can be done without it but youwill notice a bigger diff. if your not gonna do it then at least get a thinner head gasket
