my parents have been lookin at some bikes for my younger brother lately and im completley lost in that area. what are some good dirtbikes for youger guys? hes almost 9 and really big for his age. he can do wheelies and jump a little on my 400, so he can handle a bigger bike, but he might want to race to, so what classes could he race?

i guess what im trying to ask is whats a good all around (and relatively cheap) bike for a younger guy that he can ride trails and stuff but then race it competitively?

If he is 9 he would race the 65 class. The best 65 out is the KTM

I'm pretty sure he can race an 85cc bike as well.

If you want a 4 stroke maybe check into a CRF150?

If he is going to be racing, Id try to find a CRF150R or a CR85R.

Really, the 4-stroke will be a better trail bike (of course). If you could actually tell us what his height, weight and skill level on a bike are, it would help alot.:)

If he is just starting out racing do not buy the crf150 you cannot race that in any 85 classes.

Truthfully I don't think there is a race class for a 9 yr old on a CRF150.

Jerry can correct me if I am wrong but I think you can race up to a 125cc 4 stroke on the 85cc class? I found these classes in the AMA rulebook from 2007 (2008 not posted yet)

Class 5: 52cc-65cc two stroke and 52cc-90cc four stroke 7 thru 11 yrs.
Minimum wheel size 10”
Maximum wheel size 14”
Maximum (adjusted length) wheelbase 45”
Class 6: 52cc-65cc 2-stroke & 52cc -90cc 4-stroke Ages 6-9
Hillclimb only
Minimum wheel size 10”
Maximum wheel size 14”
Maximum (adjusted length) wheelbase 45”
Class 7: 66cc-85cc 2-stroke Stock 7 thru 11
75cc-125cc 4-stroke
Class 8: 66cc-85cc 2 stroke Modified 7 thru 11
75cc-125cc 4-stroke
Class 9: 66cc-85cc 2 stroke Stock 9 thru 13
75cc-125cc 4-stroke
Class 10: 66cc-85cc 2 stroke Modified 9 thru 13
75cc-125cc 4-stroke

So if you are wanting a 4 stroke you may want to consider the Yamaha TTR125, KLX110 or CRF100???

he's like 4'9" about 105 lbs. and really strong for his age. he would be doing mostly trail riding, and riding at tracks every now and then and racing a little bit. he doesnt have any experience on a bike but hes been riding quads for about 4 years. we want to get a bike cause theyre so much cheaper. also, we wouldnt want to get a 65 one year, then have to get a 70 next summer, then an 85...

Id say, look for a CRF100, TT-R125, or maybe even a KLX/DR-Z110.

You can run the 150 in the super mini class and schoolboy class only not the 85 classes.
