Just kind of curious of what i should look for in this 250r? Found 1 for a grand has new ugly green plastic, fires on first kick doesn't feel like much compression but haven't checked it, needs a seat, needs bushings and bearings in the front a arms, seems to smoke alittle more than normal. Should i just leave it alone or will it be worth the money. Kinda new to this.

I think so far it sounds like an amazing deal. Is there any aftermarket on it?

-If it starts, runs, and shifts threw all gears your good in my book. Even with extra smoke coming from pipe, or low comp. for 1K you cant go wrong. even if you need new piston kit, cylinder bored, and new gaskets you would be looking at around $250 ($1250 for a fresh top end R would still be great)

-Check the frame for cracks, re-welds, or bends. If theres a small crack it can be re-welded and your still fine in my book, if it has some welds but they are clean or not in a major area your still good. Now if the frames BENT then I think your starting to get to into that "it might not be a good deal" zone.

But, if the Frame is solid GET IT!!! and hurry before someone else does.

The Bearings, bushings, and seals can ad up but I still think you'll be ok. The seat can also be replaced for fairly cheap.

For $1000 you will NOT find a better platform in a quad...

If you dont get it be very sure to post up the guys information so someone else here can grab it up.

(if the frames bent, a-arms all beat up, barly starts, looks like its been sitting in a lake and has no aftermarket I would pass.)

Did you buy the 250r? I'll take the plastic, I can swap you a set of race cut fronts and full rears(black) with a baldwin seat. Or I'll pay cash, where are you located? I also have a nice set of stock a-arms, a fmf pipe with silencer, ct pipes(midrange, whale), sparks tt pipe, front spindles with hubs and good bearings, brand new sleeve with new stock wiseco piston, +1 swingarm, 86-87 or 88-89 rear shock linkages, 89 frame, blue rear plastics, nice orange front full fenders, brand new trail techs in the box, or a whole bunch of other stuff-I also have a atv hauler. Let me know, are there any cracks in it I can't see?

From what I've read, I'd get it, no doubt about it. The things you've mentioned are nothing for what you are getting.

I also have a rad carrier with good bearings, I just want the green plastic. I have some beat race cut spray canned plastic, the baldwin seat, a fmf pipe with silencer, and the carrier I could trade. I also have a couple of rear calipers, what exactly is wrong with the rear brakes? To recap, you can have a running, riding r and get rid of the green plastic you don't like. Let me know, and thanks.

Where? I've been looking for a while, never found a clean set. He doesn't like green, I do so why wouldn't I try to get them? I think the original post topic was (Is this bike worth a g)? I would say yes, most of the other people on here say yes. I ride a completely aftermarket laegers long travel R, and have less into it than the 04 400ex I bought brand new. The R has worlds better suspension, way more power, and is just a all-around better bike.

It's not an 86 :eek2:

The characteristics of the frame, a-arms and possible aluminum swingarm point to a 88-89 model. Either way, BUY IT! With stock pipe and other trim, it's probly on its first bore. You may have a gem on your hands.
