I am looking into buying a 450r or a 400ex . I currently ride a 250x slightly modified. It will go to my wife when I purchase my next atv. I mainly ride trails and occasionally we go to the track but mostly stick to riding in the woods. I have heard that the 450r has very long gears and are difficult to ride on trails with. I was wondering if I dropped a tooth on the front if that would help in the trails and how it would affect the over all performance. The 450r would have a hrc kit and slip on also. Then if I went with the the 400ex it would have a full exhaust, jets, filter, and lid removed. What would be the best route for me? (Have not rode the 450r yet but have rode a modified 400ex)

Go with the 450r. It's only 1st gear that is a little funny at first in tight trials, but after a couple rides you'll have it down to a science. The 400ex is awesome until you ride a 450r.

If all you do is trails, the 400ex may be better, if you do anything else ever, you're going to wish you had the R. Coming from a 250X, you're going to feel like you're riding an uncontrollable one way missle the first few times, but you'll get used to it and that grin wont ever come off your face!

well, if i was in your position, and money isnt a issue, i would buy the 450r... you already have some riding time under your belt...when i got my first quad which was the 450r i was 13. and im still alive and kicking, so you shouldnt have any problem handling these things. and all i do is trail ride, but i might be getting into some racing, and i know i have the power to be competitive....

I have been riding utility big bore quads all my life. I just got into sport atv's recently because both my brother inlaws have got sport quads and now we got my father inlaw talked into it and he is going today to get a 2004 400ex. My brother inlaws ride a raptor 660 and a 400ex both are modified. The 660 is ridiculous it tries to come over to easy. I love the way the 400ex rides but some times I just want more.

Your biggest problem is that your wife is going to be a LONG WAYS behind you......on either quad. The 400ex is a better trail quad IMO. The 450R is a great quad if you are ready for it. It would be a giant step up from a 250x. You cant go wrong either way, they are both great quads. If it was me I would buy a 400ex, ride it for a year or so and then buy the 450r. And give the 400ex to your wife so she has a chance of keeping up.

i went from a stock 250x to a 450r one year ago, to this day, it was the best choice i have ever made. Go with the 450r DEFINATLY

Thanks for the info. I just looked at the predator 525 IRS reviews (for the record I am a die hard Honda man) and it looks like it would be an ideal quad for trails and GNCC style racing. I am not to fond of Polaris but I must say they have done well on this machine. The best thing they did was change the engine over to a KTM. Has anyone heard of any problems that these quads are having. I wish Honda would come out with something smaller than the 700 in an IRS. I must admit though the 525 IRS is pretty tempting.
