I was wondering if some of you 2 stroke guys could help me out. A buddy of mine has a '88 250r. He took the cylinder in and had it bored with a new piston, installed new reeds and a carb kit. The problem is he is running way rich and he is using a lot smaller jets then he is told too. He can't ride with out fouling a plug every hour. He has a K&N filter and a Curtis Sparks MX pipe.
Any idea on what we should check? I will have to double check what jets he has in now.
Thanks...

Whats His Gas/Oil Mix?

Check the above and also find out what the main and pilot jets are, and what needle position the clip is in. Has he done plug chops at WOT in 5th or 6th? Does it foul at low rpm, mid, high? What carb is he using?

it could be his gas/oil mix, or mabe his airfilter is plugged hardcore, needle seat is messed up, etc

let us know what jets he is running, and where the clip is on the needle.

maybe he has a main seal leak on the clutch cover side?

Check all of the above. But I would check the carb myself. Needle, jets etc....

Thanks for all the questions, I will see him this weekend and ask. Then get back to you all. I do know that he is running the stock carb, or at least it is the one that came with it. The gas/oil mix is the same as what he uses on his Banshee, but I am unsure of the mixture. He bought a new K&N for it so I know it has to be clean.

If i'm not mistaking but a shee use's a heavier mix of oil/gas mix.
Tell him to lean up on the mix. I forget what the mix for a 250 should be. I think 32:1, but I'm not sure, this my be a little rich also.

My R did something similar. Turned out my stator was going south on me. Maybe his needs to be tested, it could be weak.

Does it spit out a lot of oil onto the rear silencer? If so that means he needs to go with less oil in his gas.

it could be that seal Bee mentioned, no matter how lean u go, it will still be rich with that seal, weird

I talked with him last night. He is mixing the fuel 32:1, he read that the manual recommended 25 or 28:1. Wouldn't that be a richer oil mixture? There is no oil slober coming out of the pipe and I would not call it smoking bad, no more than his shee. It seems to run ok but I don't think it has the power that it should. If a seal was leaking, wouldn't that make it run lean? or using tranny oil? We will keep checking and thanks for the tips. :)

there are 2 seals that mess with the jetting, the stator seal which leans it out, and the clutch seal, which richens it, these are hard to detect without a leakdown test

I bet that is the problem then. Can they be changed easily? within reason that is.

them seals are very easy to change, since it has to be the clutch, its a lil harder than the stator seal, as oil and coolant is goin to come out a lil, al u hav to do is remove the kickstarter and sometimes brakepedal, and remove the 8 or 6 bolts that hold the cover on, replace the seal, and done

I told him about it, he is going to replace both seals while he is doing it. The seals are only about $8. We will see if this helps.
Thanks. :D
