honda 400ex questions

Here are some questions about the honda 400ex. I own 2 building a third to race hare-scrambles and gnnc (maybe). I'm going with over bore 406cc with 11.5 compression ratio. does this sound good it will have aftermarket exhaust wiyh header. I recently talked to Mickey from FST and going with his aux. oil cooler. Has anyone done this to their 400ex yet? Plus I will be putting in a fan also to cool it more. I will give people a heads up don't talk to Duncan racing or Baldwin all they want you to is sell the 400ex and get a 450r. I will tell you that Mickey from FST is great person to talk to for advice or help. This is what the 400ex people need a honest person to talk to, Thanks Mickey. As for the suspension I'm going with a stock rear shock with either a 450r or aftermarket fronts. I either looking at Works AT Steeler with rezzys or others. What are your opinions on that also. All help with be great. Also thanks for Atvriders for this site also.

I can tell you the money you,ll be spending to get that 400ex in the range of the new 450s will cost a arm& leg to do plus it will make it unreliable.Those Co.s are just pointing you in a better direction you wont see any 400exs finishing in top positions when there racing the new 450s the new 4-strokes are just suprior motors.Not to say the 400ex is not a good quad it,s just not as good at racing than the new breed of 4-strokes.the money you put in the 400ex to race you could have a new450r! if your serious about racing get new 450!

Are you serious? A properly built 400ex wont be unreliable, and in the end still cost less than a 450 with mods. And also if its built right, a 400 will do just fine against a 450. Its so much more fun to beat guys on there 450 when your on your 400ex which is very possible.

as a test for my new piston and cam...im able to keep up with my neighbors stock 450r in 1st, 2nd, and most of the way through 3rd. 4th and 5th they pull away , but he doesn't blow me away at all anymore. This was a straight shot drag...but if we were to take it to the woods...things would be very close...granted neither of us are great riders... but i sortof agree with drew...

So for whats its worth...do what you want...you don't have to have a 450r to have fun....

Casey and Drew, I agree what you are saying. Casey what piston and cam did you put into your 400ex?

Yeah there still are times where my dad prefers my 440EX over his 450R. Like in the handling dept. If you made a 400EX with just as powerful of a motor like the 450R and put just as good of suspension on it, FOR SURE it would be better and outsell the 450R any day.

how are the works shocks ? Does it handle the same as your dads 450r? Also do they have reserviors also?

The Works don't have rezzies but are way better ride quality than pops 450R. It handles better than the 450 too.

i also have a stage 1 hotcam and +1 mm 11:1 piston and port... i raced a 440 once and it was only about 1 mph faster. it was an older build, but still. i can also keep up with 450r's up to 3rd/4th gear.

When I raced my 400ex Xc, I had TCS suspension, he(Todd@TCS) can rebuild your rear but you should buy his fronts.
I had an HMF slip on, razr tires and Propeg nerfs.
I had no problem beating the 450's and even took some wins. It was very reliable and the guy I sold it to still races it.
